I agree about Hairpsray. I thought that the melodies themselves were great. But the book and the entire production just didn't do it for me.
hmm id also have to say hairspray. love the music, the book..not so much. but i dunno...
Chess.
And come on. City of Angels? That show is for stage, what an amazing design!
Rent as it is on Broadway now. I'd much rather listen to the cast recording.
CAMELOT. Love the CD, but you could write the Great American Novel waiting for the songs. The book is verrrrry ponderous.

Wicked, I liked most of the music, but didn't like the way it translated on stage.

I third broadwaygirl's comment about RENT... and same goes for Miss Saigon without Lea Salonga
Somebody mentioned The Rink. Seeing The Rink was better than the album.

Miss Saigon? You guys are crazy, the stage production is absolutely stunning.. we're talking the Cameron Mackintosh original, right? Not non-Equity, etc.
I can't imagine The Last Five Years being better on stage than the recording, it is complete in the songs IMO.
I love that recording too, Jake, but there must be something stunning about seeing "Next 10 Minutes" live.
CastAlbumFan is right about Camelot. You can write a novel,as well as read one, during those ponderous book scenes.
