I would think it would be released on DVD only through one of those on-demand services like Amazon has where they manufacture it only when you order.

For better or worse all digital is the way of the future. Physical media is starting its slow march to the grave.
I strongly doubt that. A lot of people prefer physical copies of things and sales for them are still very good.

I thought this performance was filmed in October 2009. James left the cast the following month. John Tartaglia was replaced by Robb Sapp in August 2009 and came back for this filmed performance.

Yeah. This one had a movie studio behind it and it starred a family-friendly commodity. It may not be the most worthy show, but if any other show could have gotten the film treatment instead...it would have.

It's not decided by committee. Dreamworks is the one footing the bill for THEIR show. By all means go fund a show to be filmed that has no real mass public appeal.

Just finished watching... Excellent documentation of the production... I enjoyed it more tonight than the performance I saw at the Broadway Theatre. Some really nice (great, even) moments with Brian, Sutton, Daniel, Christopher, and the whole cast.

I'm watching the show right now on I-tunes. It's such a hilarious musical. Brian, Sutton, Christopher, Daniel, and John are perfection. The camera work is really well-done. I'm so glad this performance was finally made available.

The reprise of Big Bright Beautiful World seems as if it was shot without an audience... just incredibly put together. Watching for second time... First time I ever felt for these characters.

Another reason that this is valuable is that the licensed script to Shrek is somewhat SADISTIC in its tendency to throw stage effects at you in incredibly vague wording, with no indication to what you could do to stage this.
"Farquaad's legs begin dancing insanely."
"Dragon breathes a stream of fire, and Farquaad is incinerated down to ashes."
At least Beauty and the Beast never gets more complicated than "Beast transforms, once." Fiona has so many switches back and forth in act 2 it's insane. Having a video will allow at least SOME insight into the way some of the tricks might work, although I doubt that many small regionals can pull off incinerating a man to ashes.
