What ever happened to the production of Singing in the Rain that was supposed to star Derek Hough? Someone was asking me about it the other day and the last news I'd heard was back in December. Is it still moving forward? Or pretty much DOA?

I really hope it makes its way to Broadway with Derek Hough. He's such a brilliant performer in every way.
Now he's got World Of Dance which is a big gig, but it's just once a year and I imagine it doesn't take up a ton of his time (it's pre-taped). Besides that, his schedule seems fairly open.
I'm afraid there's a chance producers have just moved on from this. Outta sight, outta mind.

According to Derek on the WWHL After Show tonight, this is still in the works.
I'd much prefer a Robbie Fairchild helmed version.

Considering Harvey Weinstein was producing --- I very much doubt it's happening. Harvey's a little busy with other things at the moment.

Do I live under a rock or is Hough an actual star? I just can't see his 2 million instagram followers translating into Broadway ticketbuyers for a sustained run... this is an "I'll believe it when I see it" scenario, if other producers have indeed picked up the rights to SITR as he implies in the interview.

The stage adaptation is...soggy. It never quite works in the productions I've seen (though I've only seen clips of the Théâtre du Châtelet version that Weinstein was transferring). I think the magic of the film is in the three stars' performances, Kelly & Donen's choreography, and the cinematic "meta" elements, all of which are lost onstage. To say nothing of the songs, which are decorative but don't really drive the plot.
I adore the film, but I'd love to see a fully reimagined/revised Singin' for the stage. Maybe by Ivo Van Hove, and instead of rain, it's blood!

Four stars - Jean Hagen steals every scene she is in as Lina Lamont and basically walks away with the movie without doing a full musical number.
