It's the coverage that's supporting the arts. Additionally, the obama's have been to b'way a few times, with and without the girls in tow.
It's certainly not HURTING the arts -- if the above is correct, the production was still paid for the entire house, then RE SOLD for the fundraiser. The arts aren't supporting him at all. They are being paid to perform -- just like any other Weds night. (just with Secret Service men being around.)

I'm not sure Obama is intentionally saying anything about broadway or the arts by attending. I seriously doubt it was Obama's (or his people's) idea. People may like to believe that, but let's be honest here, this was purely a fundraiser. Most likely Whoopi's idea. No matter how much you may like someone, if they're a politician, almost everything they do is someone calculated.

Posted: 6/24/11 at 3:04pmWell actually, it seems Obama has made several pro-arts statements so far. I'm not going to think too hard on this, but there was that series of music nights at the White House where Broadway performed, he has been to several Broadway shows, he's hosted several prominent arts figures in the White House, awarded Yo Yo Ma & Harper Lee presidential medals of freedom.... these are all gestures, yes, but it's obviously more than Bush ever did.
