Sneak Preview of "Smash", my thoughts...

I was able to attend a sneak preview of "Smash" tonight. It's a top notch show with top notch actors. Katherine McPhee was a pleasant suprise as I had minimal expectations of her. She is the lead and I can honestly say she can carry the show. The only person I felt was a little out of place is Megan Hilty. I love the girl, but I just felt her star power is too big and more meant for the stage and not TV. Though, she did wow me during the baseball number written for the Marilyn musical. The musical numbers written for the show are so-so, not bad, but not great. The way the musical numbers were done reminded me alot of "Chicago" (the movie) in that all the glitz and glammer happens in the characters heads (for the most part). There is plenty of drama, story and a few laughs to keep most of us satisfied. I just hope it can survive the season.

I really enjoyed it. We even got Playbills, though I must say, having a Playbill with a movie theater's name on it is disconcerting.
My worry is that some of the humor is just too niche for a mainstream audience. There were things my friends and I were cracking up at, but we were in the minority on some of those jokes. Inside jokes are great, but I wonder if there is enough here for non-theater folk to enjoy.

Posted: 1/10/12 at 1:46amYeah, I see where you're coming from. I wish she would get the role. I am curious to see what they make of her character if she doesn't.

Posted: 1/10/12 at 2:45am^Really? It has nothing to do with her as a PERSON. What a shame, Megan Hilty is getting national exposure -- it's a shame that her character doesn't "win". (Besides, its not like the 'best' person always gets the part, anyway.) I'm sure Hilty is all upset with her role.

Posted: 1/10/12 at 3:58amRead an interview in the LA Times that Bernadette Peters will have a recurring role as Megan Hilty's mother - i thought at first it was a one episode appearance - so that sounds very exciting! It states that during an "intense" scene between the two, Bernadette asked if a reporter and crew members could leave the room. Sounds good to me!

Posted: 1/10/12 at 3:41pmI've said it before, I'll say it again, if Spiderman has shown us anything on it's journey to Broadway is that the drama is endless so if this show can market it's self well (which I do think it's doing) and get a good audience right out of the gate they'll do fine. My concern is and it might not even be a valid concern but I watch a majority of the morning talk shows (Live with Kelly, GMA, The View, Ellen and Anderson. It's sad I know) and I haven't seen one of the stars pushing this thing.

You won't see them "pushing this thing" until the thing actually airs.

Or at the EARLIEST the week before it airs. How many times have you seen a guest star on one of those talk shows when the host says, as a closing line for the segment, "And [insert show title here] premiers THIS Friday night on [insert TV network here]."? All the time. Never earlier than that.
