I only just heard about this; sounds intriguing. I'm in favour of more fairy tale-themed musicals.
This will be an adaptation of the popular Eowyn Ivey novel, commissioned by Arena Stage (Washington DC) with involvement from Georgia Stitt, "DC-based playwright John Strand and Alaska-based bluegrass musician Bob Banghart" (https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/BWW-Exclusive-New-Musicals-at-54-Series--Jennifer-Ashley-Tepper-Interviews-John-Jiler-and-Georgia-Stitt-About-BIG-RED-SUN-20151222).
I can't find out much about it yet; possibly there's not much to find. Apparently there was a workshop around January: https://twitter.com/georgiastitt/status/693233499864702976. Georgia Stitt talks a little about writing the score at https://firstonlinewithfran.com/2015/10/26/georgia-stitt-her-need-to-tell-through-music/.
Does anybody have more that they're able to share about this one?

I read the novel (which I loved up until the end, when it suddenly went from fairy tale to ridiculously mundane) and I'm curious as to how this would work on stage. I kind of hope they'll rewrite the ending into something that fits more seamlessly with the rest of the story.

This is premiering at Arena Stage in April. I’ll actually be in DC on the first weekend of performances, but it seems like all tickets are $110. I know this is a subscriber house but that seems really high to me. Anyone have leads on discounts?

I interviewed Georgia last week in connection to another musical she has in development right now (BIG RED SUN, which is premiering at 11th Hour Theatre Company in Philadelphia in May). She spoke very excitedly about this show. It is going to be produced at a theater in Alaska immediately following the DC engagement.

Arena Stage has a great rush. 30 minutes before curtain, all tickets are half price. When I've gone in the first week or two a show is open, I've never failed to get tickets. I saw Dear Evan Hansen multiple times for half price that way.

(Forgive me, I’m on mobile)
I remember seeing an ad for this at our PAC, it’s playing for an oddly short run (even in Alaska the standard is an eight-performance show-week). It’s only playing May 25-27 in Achoeage and then June 9th and 10th in Juneau.
Kind of funny to see it being discussed here, as Alaska’s theatre scene is so distant from the rest of the U.S. We rarely get an equity tour, is usually just non-equity and stock regional. Lots of new works too, but rarely something of note. We’re getting BOOK OF MORMON this Fall, which is nice. First time in years we’ve gotten an equity tour.

Nice to hear that this show is moving forward. It seems that two songs from the show and a Georgia Stitt interview will be presented at the Good to Go Festival in New York tonight:

I live in DC. Just about every Arena Stage show will discount on Goldstar. I’ve seen many shows there using that service.

I really enjoyed Snow Child, here are the highlights and a few issues (all my opinion, I am not an expert or critic). My two favorite cast members were Christiane Noll (Mabel)- Amazing Singer, Fina Strazza (Faina) - her acting in the first half was amazing, especially for a teenager. On top of that her voice was excellent. Buying tickets to Snow Child just to see them would be worth it. There is also some very impressive puppetry. The not so good is the 2nd half looses some of the engagement that was gained by intermission. The band sounded great but there is something missing, the music seemed shallow at times and songs begun to sound the same. And finally, I did think, "Was there really Blue Grass music in Alaska in the 1920's?"

leftyloveshuskies, to answer your question, an article about the show on NPR says:
"Bob Banghart says that bluegrass sound may seem more Southern than Alaskan, but "there was a long tradition of these types of instruments being up north and then it really solidified in the '20s with record players. And then the radio came in, forget about it, all you hear is country music," he says. "I like it, we're building an interesting stew — but it is musical theatre and that's the part that I find so intriguing.'"
Link to the whole thing.
Truth is I didn't know about the show until I read this. It sounds lovely. Although, is it wrong if it sounds a bit like the northern version of Bright Star to me?

The Alaska production of this show has been cancelled, unfortunately.
