CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF was the perfect example of how things can go wrong when a production crosses the Atlantic. I'd seen--and loved--the play when I saw the Elizabeth Ashley-Keir Dullea-Fred Gwynn production at Stratford, CT. I heard great things about the London production and eagerly anticipated the Broadway mounting of it. However, it was a major disappointment.
Ashley Judd is lovely to look at, but her Maggie was one dimensional. Never once did I feel the ferocity of her character. She was a delightful; little girl from the begiining to the end and there was no growth or character development. I guess the poor lass missed all the closeups she needs to project a character's feelings.
Jason Patric was a little better as Brick (and I think Beatty even said that) but there was almost no tension between him and Maggie or him and Big Daddy.
I had to agree with Ned Beatty's assessment of the two actors, but it was wrong of him to say it while the play was still in production. However, it DID result in a zoom at the box office.
