This moved me. Made my week. If Patti can forgive Glenn maybe peace in the mid-East IS possible!

Posted: 5/11/13 at 3:28pmI can't remember exactly what Patti said about Glenn in her book, but I remember being confused as to why Patti would have any beef with Glenn specifically, and then when Patti went into detail about how she and Glenn had never even spoken on the subject I understood a little bit why there might be some issues. I'm glad that's been resolved. I've always doubted that Glenn had any knowledge of what was going on behind the scenes prior to the "scandal."

All I know is I purchased tickets to see PATTI LUPONE in Sunset Blvd on Broadway. Then all the sudden it got changed to Glenn Close.
Patti had a contract to play Sunset on Broadway. It was announced with great fanfare to the press. Later, right under Patti's nose, they announced Glenn (Don't get too) Close would play it in LA.
It reminds me of when NBC put Jay Leno on at 10pm when Conan got The Tonight Show. That little gargoyle Andrew Lloyd Webber was hedging his bets.
ALW violated Patti's contract and had to pay Patti through the nose.
In Patti's book she says she was upset to not have gotten a courtesy phone call from Glenn Close. But really, that is what we call sublimation. Patti was mad that Glenn got the part she was contracted to play, and it is understandable.
I'm just pleased that these two women were able to get together. Hopefully they now both hate the man REALLY responsible, Andrew Lloyd Webber.

There really was nothing to forgive, as Glenn Close had done nothing wrong. As embarrasing and humiliating as I'm sure it was to be fired in such a public manner, it's not as if Close schemed and plotted to steal the part from under Patti's nose. What did she expect from Close? An apology? For accepting a role that had been offered to her?
As someone on ATC said, I'm sure Patti didn't call Carole Demas after Demas was fired from The Baker's Wife and replaced by LuPone.

The Carole Demas situation is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.
Both Demas and Patti were nobodies when they were cast in Baker's Wife. Demas was fired and then auditions were held, and Patti got the part.
Patti was fired (after signing a contract to perform in NY with much fanfare and publicity) specifically because Glenn Close was perceived to have gotten better notices than her when she opened in Los Angeles, never mind the fact that the show was extensively revamped from the London to the LA opening.
Whether Glenn Close owed Patti an apology can be debated, but anyone who says Patti had no right to be upset, or compares this to the Carole "The Magic Garden" Demas Baker's Wife situation is full of it. Sorry.

It is?

Yes.
It would be unacceptable for Patti to be angry at Glenn for simply accepting a part that had been offered, so Patti takes the notion that Glenn "didn't contact" her and puts her anger in that instead.
Very common.

Posted: 5/11/13 at 6:40pmWhat makes me giggle about Lupone being upset that she never got an apology from Glenn Close is that if Close DID pick up the phone and call Lupone, I'm certain she would have been b*tching about that too. "HOW DARE SHE CALL ME!"

Posted: 5/11/13 at 9:16pmWell if you watch that video I posted you'll see that Glenn and Patti were at Barbara Cook's table at the KC Honors. Glenn said to Patti "Patti- there's nothing to say and there's everything to say..."- they made up and had a wonderful dinner together. I'm so happy.

Poor Carole Demas...fired from both NO, NO NANNETTE and THE BAKER'S WIFE. Well at least she got to do GREASE.
Wasn't Demas already pretty well known in theater circles by the time she did THE BAKER'S WIFE? She had already done and GREASE and THE MAGIC GARDEN already.
Anyhoo....I agree you cannot compare the two situations.

Posted: 5/11/13 at 11:13pmI was a big fan of Carole Demas on Magic Garden as a child, but... I don't really see her in the same league as a Patti LuPone, to be honest.

I wonder how many people The Pone called after she actually did something that pissed them off?

#21So happy that Patti and Glenn had a rapprochement
Posted: 5/12/13 at 1:38amEveryone knew that Glenn was supposed to be in the LA cast and Patti was supposed to be on Broadway. When the scandal happened of course Glenn wasn't gonna say "Hey wait a minute, Andrew, doesn't Patti have a contract for Broadway? Why am I being offered the part." In Patti's book she mentions that of course she will never know if Glenn had anything to do with it, but a courtesy call would have been nice, or atleast some response from Glenn from one actress to another. So when Patti says she made up with Glenn I think she let it all go when Glenn sort of broke the ice, since I'm sure they haven't spoken since sunset happened.

"Patti- there's nothing to say and there's everything to say..."
I'm surprised Patti was ok with this. It's like an obscure Buddhist riddle.
#23So happy that Patti and Glenn had a rapprochement
Posted: 5/12/13 at 10:33amI still don't see how it's "sublimation."
#24So happy that Patti and Glenn had a rapprochement

It's sublimation because Patti's natural instinct was to be resentful and angry that Glenn Close took her role as Norma on Broadway.
Patti realizes that she really can't be angry at THAT so she channels that anger into the notion that Glenn never gave her a "courtesy call" like Betty Buckley did before it was announced that she'd be taking over Norma in London when Patti left. I'm not saying Patti was RIGHT, per se, but it is certainly understandable that she'd have a problem with Glenn- and I'm glad they've cleared the air.
Classic sublimation.
They should make a buddy picture now!!
