I agree, though he's MIA again!

When I saw the show on Saturday did people stand at the end, yes, but not the place as a whole. From where I was sitting, the applause throughout was polite at best with the exception of the big dance number in Act 2 (which did receive a cheer; and deservedly so).
Folkyboy, me, too.

Please--there were people standing for TABOO--I think Jane2 was one of 'em!
Cry-Baby is a poor attempt at a musical. It is poorly constructed, unmelodious, and horribly acted. The set looks like trash and the orchestra sounds flat.
This show needs to close TODAY. It is a disgrace to legitimate theater.*
*Disclaimer - I have not seen the show or any production pics, nor heard any of the score.

My bad. I thought the more I wrote, the trendier I become.

I was just being snarky j*.
I actually really enjoy the score.
Then get yourself up to NYC and write a positive review. LOL
"It's in its FIRST FEW DAYS OF PREVIEWS for god sakes. No wonder these Broadway boards get such a bad rep.
I don't get it. You want Broadway to succeed, yet you butcher shows to death before they open"
Cry Baby played at La Jolla Playhouse before coming to NY, so the fact that its in its first week bears no substance. They've had plenty of time to work on this show.
Or course, who doesn't want Broadway to succeed, but not to sacrifice a good book, good score, good performances. If that's what a show is offering (which is the case with Cry Baby), it has no business being on Broadway.
Is it so hard to grasp the concept that show could be so universally mediocre that the majority of posters on here (all theatre-going enthusiasts) simply did not like it and are sharing their negative opinions?
That was awesome taz...now if I can just get ya off the Hillary wagon....
Cry-baby was bad in la jolla as well, I'm still wondering how it was well received. Perhaps it was the reviewers hoping to see the show succeed as the closest thing to broadway is an out of town tryout for us southern california folks, and then there are the scaled down tours. A few poster's mentioned that the audience response was good, however, when I watched I swear there were blank faces on everyone in the audience. I couldn't help but turn and look around because I could no longer bare the sight of what was on stage. I wish Dragone's Carmen transferred. I hope la jolla wasn't the last of that production.
If the internet had existed back in 1988-1989, do you think we'd be going through this for LEGS DIAMOND? Or CARRIE?
I saw the show in La Jolla and loved it. The show in La Jolla was in great shape - yes, the first act needed tightening and the character arc of the two leads needed to be sharpened and brought into better focus. I loved it and I'm sure that the show is only getting better while in previews in NY.
It is not groundbreaking so if you're going to see the show and expect it to be a defining show on the order Hairspray, In The Heights or Passing Strange, it is not, but it's a very fun show with a great score, hilarious lyrics, a superb cast, amazing choreography and very clever set design.

I'm glad you enjoyed it BroadwayBaby6, this show really needs the support of everyone that did enjoy it. I may have seen it on an off night. Aside from the agreeing that SOME of the choreography was amazing, I saw an entirely different show. We are talking about the Cry-Baby production, right? I remember there was a discussion after the show for the audience to sit down and discuss how to improve the show. Those that did stay were being too nice on the show. They were pointing out the same things you had just pointed out in your post. Interesting.
For what it's worth, at least a couple of the posters who hated it admitted in their posts that the rest of the audience loved it and that they were in the extreme minority. One guy even mentioned how he and one other person in the audience where the only two people sitting for the bows.
But your thread is very relevant. I've found myself defending the show on here even when I think it needs work solely because of how scathing some of those posts were.

...if you mention "butchering": let's wait for the reviews, THEY will do the butchering, we're only preparing the meat.
...just jesting.
But I'm well aware even Pirate Queen and Tarzan had fans and most people who sat in the audience seemed to enjoy it. And yet, those who didn't just weren't staying there any longer than they had to. So it only shows: every show has an audience waiting for it, possibly a limited one.

See, I totally agree- I HATE when people just decide to bash a show because it's the "cool thing to do". However, when even people who are generally very open minded about shows and will not speak negatively about something unless they really really didn't enjoy it, that's when I kinda have to start thinking that it probably isn't the best quality of productions. Granted that still doesn't merrit outright bashing, because it's rude, but.. if all the reviews are negative, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that there really probably AREN'T a whole lot of people who would enjoy it. haha. And, if that's the case, I guess it's nice to know that we should probably do some looking into it before going to see the show, and know that we like the music/cast/story/etc.! It's never a very pleasent thing to spend a decent amount of money only to be dissapointed.

Some of these at least had somewhat of a decent score in midst of all the artistical garbage. Differently than Cry-Baby aka the great black hole.
