Fosse76, I think Craig is trying to say that Babs and Judy are icons for the gay community as well.
John Waters work has offended gays in the past, oh the irony...

Pfft, as if homosexuals are the only thing that the Scientologists hate. Heck, according to them, my future profession consists of the evil minions of Lord Xenu.

As a fat person, I was offended when the average sized Michael McKean played the role. I mean, Edna's a fat icon!

Please tell me that's not what they actually think. Seriously, Scientology never fails to amaze me.

This just in, "The Order of the Knights of Bulimia" and "The Counsel of Wrinkly Faces" are calling for a boycot for the new Hairspray movie because Queen Latifah is the spokeswoman for Pizza Hut and Maybelline. They are saying that buying tickets to see this movie, they add to the income of the woman who threatens to make them fatter and look younger.
That's how seriously I take this. To stand against this, you must take a stand against other programs and movies in which Scientologists participate in. And I, for one, don't feel like giving up watching "The King of Queens" every night.
this is just nuts. i'm sure there have been straight men cast in the part on broadway. no one made a big fuss then! if there going to ask people to boycott something at least boycott something worth while. i can't wait to see the movie:)
haha its moments like this im glad i live in the UK lol
This is going to hold just as much water as the argument to not see DREAMGIRLS because of Eddie Murphy's public homophobia.
There are much worse things to be crying about. Leave this sort of stuff to the Defamation League and get over it.
A movie's a movie. Travolta is getting his paycheck either way. If he starts slinging gay slurs or punching RuPaul on the street, then I'll ruffle my tail feathers.

I agree with the majority here. I still plan to see the movie.
However Travolta's hypocricy on the subject has irked me--even if he is "gay tolerant/friendly", and is best friend's with "tolerant" Oprah, etc (this goes for Kirstie Alley and others) Dianetics still haven't updated or changed their belief that homosexuality is something that--if it can't be changed thru years auditing (and the book basically says it's rare that it can) that it should be dealt with (I'm not exgaerating) by euphanasia the way other dangerous problems--like incurable murderers should be dealt with.

It just makes me so f'ing mad.
'Cause this one guy writes a blog- like in the beginning of May- and only now it becomes a story.. where was he a few years ago when JT was being considered?
I makes me upset - because it's now being reported as the "The entire gay community!" "Leading gay activists!"
If John had a problem- he wouldn't have signed on to do the film. Boycotting a person because of their personal freedom- now THATS hypocritical.
We have more to fear than Scientology and John Travolta.
Call me when Pat Robertson makes his movie musical debut.

I think you should boycott the Hairspray movie simply because it looks like a cookie-cutter translation of a musical that was mediocre and overrated in the first place.
Not sure if I will see the movie in a theater. The trailers don't really do much for me. If I don't, I will surely rent it. And Craig, I am boycotting Barbara Streisand! (For reasons I have posted here on the off-topic board)
"We have more to fear than Scientology and John Travolta. "
Well... I can't think of a whole lot of things that scare me more than Scientology, actually, but that wouldn't stop me from seeing this movie. We ought, then, to boycott movies that deal with gay issues starring any actor from just about ANY fundamentalist religion, Christian, Jewish, Islamic, or Cult notwithstanding.
Is Travolta a wackjob in his personal life? Perhaps. But I agree with the general consensus that if he was publicly - or even privately but not reservedly - anti-gay, he wouldn't've chosen to take a drag role. Additionally, Travolta's a good actor. I think Tom Cruise is a psychopath, and I won't see his movies, but it has less to do with Scientology than that I believe Cruise can't act his way out of a paper bag.
Frankly these self-appointed gay rights leaders tick me off. They tend to be no worse than the religious right when stuff like this happens!
Anyone else remember when the Baptist leaders decided to boycott Disney because of their gay friendly policies? Yeah, that worked out well for the Baptists. No one cared!
I am looking forward to seeing John Travolta play the role. If only because he would be the first actor I'd see that actually went to the effort of the Baltimore accent. Plus, c'mon, It's John Travolta in a dress! Who else has seen that before (unsubstantiated gossip notwithstanding)?

kyleorlando, I agree with you about the self appointed gay activists. As a gay man, I don't want most of them representing my community on some issues.
I saw John with his Boyfriend in Joe Allen's.

If I am an atheist I am STILL allowed to play a Christian on stage.
If I am a Christian, I am STILL allowed to play a Muslim on stage.
If I am a scientologist, I am STILL allowed to play a homosexual on stage.
You don't have to agree or disagree with what you're doing on stage. It is called ACTING.
GET OVER IT.
eh....
I still wouldn't kick John Travolta out of bed.
And if he see's this post. Call me!
I still think him taking the part was some kind of very bad inside joke. He's been publicly denying his homosexuality for years and it's been rumored that's the reason he chose to join Scientology in the first place. Like many self-hating gays, he's chosen to make a joke about it... "See? if I was gay like you all have been saying for years, I couldn't take the part..." Is he really gay but using the openly homophobic stance of his Church to hide it? Most certainly.
It is a fact however that Scientology is promoting homophobia and self hatred and as one of the few remaining openly declared Scientologist and standard bearer, he helps promote it. Someone said that some Christians being homophobic doesn't mean ALL Christians were. That's very true but there are no "lapse Scientologists" and Travolta has defended the cult's wacky ideas many times over.
I don't care for him as an actor or a person but that won't stop me from seeing this movie. I doubt a movie with a story like Haispray is likely to end up promoting homophobia, whoever plays in it.
I do think however it's a good thing that someone used the occasion to publicize the fact that Scientology and people like Travolta are homophobic de facto.
In 1974, Travolta played Misfit ('I'm Dream Drummin') in OVER HERE, with Patty and Maxene Andrews. When Travolta hit it big in Welcome Back Kotter, Maxene Andrews was asked about what she thought of him, she replied (and I am paraphrasing here) 'I thought he was a nice little chorus boy who slept with all the other nice little chorus boys.'
FWIW, there's been speculation about him for years.
What's interesting is that John Waters didn't write the role of Edna for a man - he wrote it for a specific man.
True dat, Rath.
I'm still a little lost on who these "leaders" are.

He's being paid to play a part, his beliefs have nothing to do with this film! Edna is not a gay charater and there are many straight drag queens!
If this was a film where John sat for 2 hours discussing the evils of homosexuality then yes boycott it but serious get over it (I'm gay btw) its not as if he's trying to cure you, his religion has nothing to do with you. And its not as if people won't go see it, I find it a bit immature to be honest.
