"Some Gay rights leaders are asking for a boycott of the upcoming remake of "Hairspray" starring John Travolta. The film is a musical update of the classic cult film by openly gay director, John Waters. Leaders are asking for a boycott, because of Scientology's stand on being a homo.
The managing editor of the Washington Blade said, “Travolta, a prominent Scientologist, has no business reprising an iconic gay role, given his [religion’s] stance on gay issues. It’s well known that Scientology rejects gays and lesbians as members and even operates reparative therapy clinics to ‘cure’ homosexuality.”
The role Travolta plays was originally played by Divine in the original.
I say boycott it, because it's going to reek! Don't waste your dough on this piece of trash! They have taken a beautiful black rose and poured glitter, cheap rhinestones and Travolta on it. Barf!"

Posted: 6/12/07 at 4:26pmAn interesting point, but gimme a break. Travolta's still entitled to his opinion, even if it is stupid and hateful.

Posted: 6/12/07 at 4:28pmThis is a bit misguided. Travolta is a hired player in a film, nothing more. There are bigger fights than this, let's establish our basic human rights before we go telling cults how they should operate. If we want constitutional rights, we have to respect the right for people to believe what they want without prosecution. If Scientology were to bank roll this movie, I would agree that it should be boycotted. We must draw the line somewhere.

Wouldn't John Travolta NOT have taken the part if he were religiously opposed to it?
Chill out, 'Mos.

Last I checked, Edna was heterosexual. Divine was perhaps a gay Icon.. but Edna?
Let's all boycott Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand next...

Well Linda Hart is a Christian with an evangelical background. We could just as easily boycotted the Original B'way produciton.
Good point Pab!

Posted: 6/12/07 at 4:47pmSince Scientology condemns gays and attempts to change them.....I wonder what good ol' gay Tom "Closet" Cruise thinks of the film. He and Travolta are "buddies." Hmmmmmmm.......

Besides the $cientology stance of 'curing the gays' and whatnot, is anyone else bothered about going to see this because of Travolta and $cientology and the way that he is (allegedly) hiding his autistic child, and denying his kid's autism and not getting his kid any help, schooling, etc.? (Apparently $cientology also believes that autistic people are 'defective' too, as autism falls under mental illness, and those with mental illnesses should be able to cure themselves.)
I don't know, Travolta disturbs me pretty much more than Cruise does these days- at least Cruise and his (allegedly) fake marriage involves two consenting adults, and not denying treatments to a child.
Or maybe I think about this too much.

Seriously, some of the dumber people who see the show think that Edna is really a man in the story who dresses as a woman
(Don't people think that if Tracy had two dads that might be a little bit more controversial than being fat and on TV?)
The role is a straight female role played by a man. The man doesn't have to be gay or stright to play the role.

Posted: 6/12/07 at 5:13pmPlease. I hate me some John Travolta, but I'm not going to want the movie to fail. I think he forgets that there are other people involved in this movie, as well.
It was awesome. - theaterkid1015

Posted: 6/12/07 at 5:17pmThis is so annoying! There are people in the world who are openly going out and saying they hate gays and all gays are going to hell. Why not boycott those people instead of an actor, who is just doing his job, which has nothing to do with his religion.

Wow. The first time I met JT was at the Human Rights Campaign Fundraiser in Hollywood.
He was friendly, and introduced himself to everyone backstage (as if we didn't already know who he was). I can't think of a gayer function (except for Gay Pride) and he seemed perfectly as ease.
This guy doesn't speak for ALL 'gays'.

I'm not sure what your point is. Edna, as a character, is a heterosexual. But what do Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand have to with that?
