Someone help me. I did not understand what he said, which I'm a little confused by, since I speak the language he was speaking. I just didn't understand WHAT IN THE WORLD it meant.
Anyone?

He was quoting a poet. The attached article explains.
Rylance Tony Speech

Posted: 6/16/08 at 1:28amI thought it was nice, but I too was one of those confused.

Apparently it's really "cool" and "funny" to give a ridiculous acceptance speech that has nothing to do with anything.
Neat, he delivered a random poem instead of acknowledging that he was just awarded a Tony.
But then again, maybe I just don't "get it". =)

Posted: 6/16/08 at 1:30amI think it was a poor attempt to say something witty. I'm sure most were just confused.

It was so terribly awkward and confusing. I loved it!
Very quirky. Rylance is always being different, folks.
#6re: Someone help me out: WTF, Mark Rylance?
Posted: 6/16/08 at 1:35amIt certainly was more entertaining than listening to a list of names of people we've never heard about.

I'm thrilled he won.
Patrick Stewart gave one of the most overrated performances of the season.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 1:38amAccording to the article he gave a funny speach at another ceramony and thought he would try it again at the Tonys

Posted: 6/16/08 at 1:38amThat was hilarious. Tonys are always taking themselves too seriously.

I thought at first he was making a little recap of the year in plays, making funny remarks about each one.
Clearly I was mistaken haha.
and yes winston, it was called the Drama Desk

Why so much confusion?
I thought the speech was WONDERFUL!
I'm a HUGE Rylance fan, and I adored the delivery!
The majority of the folks present seemed to fully enjoy it!
Mary McCormack shaking her head like, "Thiiiis guy!" was cute!
Congratulations, Mr. Rylance!

Posted: 6/16/08 at 2:32amI loved it and found it hilariously random--as did most of the people I was with. Definitely one of the top 3 speeches of the night, IMO.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 2:53amMark Rylance is an idiot. He is convinced that William Shakespeare did not write the plays, sonnets and narrative poems by William Shakespeare.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 3:20amI loved the speech. I thought it was fantastic. It really was what was needed to break up the monotonous thank yous from most people.

Mark Rylance is great. I'm sure you can bear to have one speech in a year not be a tear-streaked list of names of agents, producers, family members, friends, cast members, deities, squirrels, whatever. :P
Shame most of the reports are spelling Louis Jenkins's name wrong though.

I think y'all can tell what I thought of the speech.
And Mary McCormick's face was fantastic.

I think we have a winner for my new favorite BWW signature.
Rylance is a genius. He's the best part of every award ceremony.
#21re: Someone help me out: WTF, Mark Rylance?
Posted: 6/16/08 at 6:58amI thought it was absolutely hilarious! And, I felt like he was reciting it in character, which just made it funnier to me. But, the best part was when the camera panned to his co-stars and they all had the "WTF?" looks on their faces!! :) It was the only winner's speech I actually paid attention to!

In its whimsical way, I took his speech to be all about playing a role ... the clothes that you strap on that tell people what you are. If you read the last quote ("Otherwise it might appear that you have no idea what you are doing, that you are merely wandering the earth, no particular reason for being here, no particular place to go.") I think he's saying if you apply that to acting, it is what has given definition to his life.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 7:32amAlthough it was, in fact, a quote, I believe his objective was to confuse people, in quite a hilarious fashion. Personally I thought it was brilliant, but maybe that's just because I have a quirky sense of humor. Definitely up there in my top 3 as well, probably my favorite.
