First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak out for me.
Really a beautiful, beautiful concert. I was blown away by every performance. There were no pledge breaks here in Boston so I just got sit there for two hours full of uninterrupted Sondheim glory. This really was such a treat.
Alliez, there were no pledge breaks in my town either, it was really wonderful just to see the whole show with no interruptions. The only number that was cut from it here was "Something's Coming," they were all so wonderful, giving it their all and so excited to be there.
Did anyone else catch Patti LuPone's face as Donna Murphy's Phyllis unravels towards the end of "Could I Leave You?," it's kinda brilliant.
Yes, it was one of my favourite parts.
Can someone post a complete song list of who sang what? Thanks. So sorry I missed this, can't wait for the DVD or youtube.

The whole show was pretty near perfect, I found John McMartin to be particularly amazing.
(was this taped before or after ms. thing broke her foot?)
Obviously before. It was filmed in March.
someone said in Chicago it was the cut up version with pledges, not in Rockford! which is obviously NOT Chicago but only an hour and half away so I'm suprised they would broadcast something different...
and could this have been more perfect? I'm not sure.
I've watched this about three times now. It's so wonderful.
And, just to put it out there, Audra McDonald needs to play Sally. "Too Many Mornings" has become my unexpected favorite of the concert.
Audra McDonald and Marin Mazzie should both play Sally, I imagine they would both be wonderful in their own way. I just love each of their numbers, it's such a good concert. I do have to say I'm partial to Murphy's epic "Could I Leave You" mainly because of Murphy but also because of LuPone's wonderful face.
While I have the DVD now, so wasn't too upset about the cuts, it's kind of idiotic that "America" (with huge chunks of dance music that Sondheim didn't write) that has been shown dozens of times on television was chosen over "So Many People", Marin and Jason, or Victoria Clark.
I think I"m also in the minority the finds Olivo to be one of the most grating and overrated presences on Broadway (when she shows up) today.
And why is Patti LuPone's every blink and head turn subject to the worst possible conclusions? I think it was obvious she was fascinated by Murphy's performance and was curious as to where she was going to take it next.

Yes, but while 1% of the population knows "So Many People," 95% have heard "America." And when PBS is trying to rope in viewers who are channel flipping and just stopped on PBS because a concert is on, they're much more likely to retain those viewers if they're hearing something they recognize, at least to start.

Mazzie would sing the score expertly. But I think her acting style is more appropriate for Phyllis.
And Audra is ten years too young right now. And I just think at 5'8", she's may be too statuesque to play the petite Sally. But People get mad when I bring up height....so i'll stop. But I am very particular with my Sallys, and that includes height.

I hear ya Millie, that performance of AMERICA gets muggier and less danced everytime I see it. And in the context of all the other performers in this concert it's apparant to me Olivo can't hold a candle to the real Divas in red.
(Not to beat a dead horse, but whenever Cheets did that number in any aspect, it always stopped the show and inspired wild cheering)
As far as doing something more "viewer friendly", this was obviously a concert for us Sondheim nuts, the inclusion of that great rendering by Ms. Clarke from HOTSPOT shows they were not pandering to the audience. I would have loved to have seen Vicky in the Diva beltdown with, perhaps, DO I HEAR A WALTZ? The cuttings in certain areas seems kinda random, and I feel sorrow for anyone who missed any of it.

click the Schedule link at the top of the page. It will prompt you for your, Zip Code, Cable Company, and PBS Network in your area - it will then give you a list of the times the show will be rebroadcast.
Here in the Albany area (NY) - it's showing again tonight at 9:00pm and 3 more times during the week at 1:00am.
Good luck and enjoy!
Thanks. Was there any kind of Overture or Opening Medley or orchestral versions of sondheim songs aside from the Reds ballet??

The entire concert was just stunning.
Where did those lyrics come from for The Glamorous Life?
Wow. The troll strikes again.
Bud, keep it up. Really, just keep it up. Somehow I dont think it'll be Sondheim who gets banished.
