Wasn't it that it was indeed Laurents who said she couldn't do both? Then, when he passed she thought Sondheim would be fine with it. But partly out of respect, but also because he agreed, he doubled down on it?

I could be misremembering, and maybe the memoir says otherwise. But that's how I remember it.

The quote I gave was not in the context of Gypsy, I should maybe say. Still, it gives an idea of how he felt about Barbra. If I can remember where the quote came from I would post the source so you can all hear it for yourselves. Somewhere on YouTube.

Sondheim didn't kill it at all. He simply sad Barbra couldn't star AND direct. She must have been OK with having someone else direct because Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) was attached to it at some point.

Wasn't Laurents that one that said that Patti Lupone would star in a revival of "Gypsy", over my dead body?  I saw her performance at Ravinia and thought after Act One, if he doesn't allow her to do it he's a HUGE idiot!...I don't understand why people are so overly protective of this piece of Broadway history.  I am sure that Barbra would have done a very competent job at work acting and directing this film.  I feel that when she has passion for something, like she did with "Yentl", she will bring everything to the film that she can, and I also feel that directing this film would have been the perfect bookend to her very short film career!...

Maybe he just didn't want this movie to happen and used this as an excuse.

I've mentioned this before but this was not true by the end. To let Arthur Laurents tell it, he introduced them thinking they'd be the best of friends and neither cared much for each other, only for him to wake up 20 years later and suddenly Barbra loves Steve's music and Steve likes her enough to change his lyrics. Which was something he was notoriously not willing to budge on.
