I woke up with a sore throat yesterday, and I've got a performance on wednesday. I immiedietly started gargling with salt water, got some echinacea/goldenseal into my system, and started taking zicam. I've got enough VitC and am drinking plenty of water. Otherwise, I eat as healthily as I can, and have been on vocal rest. Does anyone know of anything that can help clear this up fast? Please help!

"Throat Kote Tea"- which really isn't quite as bad after the first swallow! DO NOT SPEAK- write whatever you have to get across; USE a vaporizer/humidifier in your room (we have a really cute one in the shape of a pig from Bed Bath and Beyond!), regular tea, PLENTY of water and, believe it or not, try a few thin slices of apple.Get some rest and good luck!

Not unless your room is the size if a closet, and you can adjust the volume of spray from the machine-ours hadn't ruined anything nor even disturbed the elctronic piano. Honestly, those animal ones are adorable (pig, cow and frog) and they usually have them at Wal-Mart and the Linen-type shops. It was WELL worth the investment($30, but they accept expired and other store's coupons!) as my D had 3 roles on rehearsal at the same time and her's has been a lifesaver.

Throat Coat tea works really well and if you put some honey in it the tea will taste better. Throat coat also makes these throat drops that really help me when I have a sore throat before a performance. I will warn you that they don't taste very good but they do the job!
I think Ricola's (with the honey in them) are the best. They work very well. Also...Do not talk!
I'd spit next time.
Am I the only one who likes the taste of Throat Coat Tea?!
Also, if you are gross and phlegmy there is a miracle solution called Buckley's cough syrup. It tastes absolutely disgusting, but it will clear you all up right after you swallow it....if you can swallow it.
also...singer's saving grace....a great spray solution that also tastes pretty miserable but gets the job done.
and try to find non-mentholated lozenges if you are just sore. you want to soothe the throat, not irritate it.
hot water with lemon and honey. yum.
ok. that's my rec.
feel better!
Good post Desiree!
I just wanted to add that Singer's Saving Grace Spray comes in flavors now. Honey Lemon, Cinnamon, and Peppermint, I believe. Still no substitute for something that tastes good, but it does the job! HAHA!
I have the same problem today. Got my cold on Thursday/Friday ish, and I have to be performance ready by Thursday of this week. Ugh. Any other suggestions?
If there's a Teavana near you: silver needle and mint blended is like being touched in the throat by Christ himself.
I think Ricola's (with the honey in them) are the best. They work very well.
NO RICOLAS! They have menthol in them and will dry you out. The very best thing you can do and the only real solution to your problem is vocal rest and lots and lots of water. NO TALKING. NO WHISPERING. Get plenty of sleep too. Sleep is the best vocal rest you can get.

Get a personal steam inhaler if you can- they have them at any walgreens/duane reade/etc etc.. and use it a few times a day. Also if you have post nasal drip, get a neti pot and use it. It's much less gross than it sounds when you read about it.
Good luck.

THROAT COAT with a lot of honey.
and I love the taste of throat coat, I am drinking some right now actually.
Also, swallow spoonfulls of honey. It soothes your throat. especially when you wake up with a soar throat, the spoonfull of honey will ease the pain.
Also, VOCAL EZE SPRAY.

If your throat is swollen, get some fresh pineapple. Also, if you have an electric juicer, make some apple/pineapple juice and add about 3 inches of ginger/16 oz. It works wonders.

Doesn't anyone use slippery elm lozenges anymore? I think they work wonderfully, and you can find them at practically any natural food stores. They may take a bit of getting used to (like the throat-coat tea), but they really help!

Hot water with about an inch of ginger root, a wedge of lemon, and honey (I usually add like two teaspoons).
Any suggestions for a stuffy nose? When I get sick, I get it all.
get a douche and do a complete nasal rinse with Alkalol (over the counter).
Your nose will be hurting for a good hour but nothing works better when it comes to that, I promise. It completely opens you up.
Repeat twice each day until the date of the performance.
Get a Netti Pot from your local grocery and use it to clean out your sinus', also gargle with the salt water that you use for the pot. Then drink luke-warm water all day and try to avoid speaking a lot. It's also a good idea to use nasal spray to keep your nose and throat clear.
