Rath, I love you. That's what I have been saying for months. The Raul obsession is the exact same as the Manoel obsession last year. An overrated performance that causes people to believe that they and ONLY they deserve Tony Awards. Raul certainly wasn't robbed because he didn't deserve it. It could have gone to anyone.

The thing that kills me is the subjective "THEY". THEY wanted to give Curtains something, THEY want to spread the wealth...The "THEY" is a group of theater professionals who vote individually. THe THEY (Tony voters) are actors ,producers,presenters,..there is no THEY as if it's one entity. It is an entity after all the INDIVIDUAL votes are tallied. SO all THEY did was vote. It's a simple as that.

This was clearly a popular vote from the Tony voters. A shame!! Raul won almost every other award for his role as Bobby. I was very disappointed. At least Company won Best Revival(this coming from a huge fan of ACL).
Raúl made an AMAZING job of a role that doesn't necessarily give the actor much to work with. He definitely deserved the Tony, and I'm terribly upset that he didn't get it.
But the thing is... David Hyde Pierce also deserved the Tony. He brings such genuine joy and energy to the stage eight times a week. Any other year, and I'd've been ecstatic to see him win. The problem is that there is only one Tony, so these two brilliantly talented gentlemen who do such great work couldn't both be awarded. And considering that 'Curtains' and 'Company' only got one award each, I'm just going to have to keep battering myself to be more accepting of Pierce's win. Because he DID deserve it.
I can't help but wonder if the Tony voters were thinking "oh lord, not another show where the actors play instruments" when they voted. 'Company' is a brilliant production and it deserved more than three nominations and one win. But if people are thinking "oh s***, that guy's got a trumpet" instead of "right, who's giving a Tony-worthy performance?", then things are going to get overlooked. I've said it before, I'll say it again; the problem with Doyle's actor-musician gimmick is that people are so focused on it, they tend to miss the brilliant work that's going on.

Raul is decent Actor (just decent), but he sounds like a sheep in heat when he sings.
has anyone informed the police?

Weez - I agree with your last statement. Its unfortunate that people also tend to lump Sweeney and Company together when they go into Company. I mean yes, he used the same technique last year in Sweeney, but so what? Its not like Company was a continuation of Sweeney.
raul was definately robbed but, there's nothing that can be done about it now.
His new song, from SA, should be Totally *******
I saw both performances. Pierce was very good but the role was light. Raul's role was the tougher of the 2 & the best I have seen the role played
I feel for him
I feel sorry for DHP that his win could be soured by a lack of grace. As he acknowledged, each of the nominess was offering an excellent performance Individually, voters have decided they just like his endearing character more.
Well done to all the nominees. Additional congrats to DHP for his win on this occasion.
THIS JUST IN: TONY INCIDENT WITH RAUL ESPARZA DECLARED UNFORTUNATE, BUT NOT A ROBBERY.
In a statement made late this afternoon after a lengthy investigation of Tony Award voting ballots and procedures, Lt. Frank Cioffi III, NYPD, has declared that noted Broadway actor Raul Esparza has not been robbed of an award. "He simply did not win" said Lt. Cioffi. "The award will remain forever in the possession of David Hyde Pierce, and Mr. Esparza has graciously conceded this. Mr. Esparza is looking forward to returning to his role in the acclaimed revival of COMPANY tomorrow evening."

LOL D2!
Though by the looks of it he might not have a show to perform in for much longer.

Interesting timing for DHP to "come out." Wonder if that contributed to his win.
The Raul obsession is the exact same as the Manoel obsession last year. An overrated performance that causes people to believe that they and ONLY they deserve Tony Awards.
Except Raul has had a steadily increasing fanbase since about 2000 (based on many performances, not just this one), he has been nominated for a Tony before, and both Michael Cerveris and David Hyde Pierce seem to believe Raul deserves a Tony as well. The Manoel Felciano obsession came about because he responded to their messages on MySpace, not because of years of acclaimed work on Broadway. And seeing as how no Raul fan has posted death threats to David Hyde Pierce yet, I resent the comparison.
That being said, Raul was not robbed. He didn't have a lock on the category and it was a competitive year across the boards. Had Jon Groff won, however, I would be at the forefront of the protest and fraud investigation.
It was a bloody good year for lead actors, both in musicals and in plays. *nods firmly*
I had hoped for Raul, but I know he will just continue to be amazing. We shall wait for next time.
I was sad he did not win. Raul's an incredible performer. So versatile!

I love Raul and was originally hoping he'd win, but I'm happy that David won.
Great post, D2, but add a bit more of Cioffi's Boston accent, references to being a theatre geek, etc, then it would be perfect!
I remember that someone specifically said they would run down 44th naked if Raul lost, since they were so sure he would win...
