Not only is O'Hara too old to do it on the big screen, she is also far too unknown to put butts in seats in movie theaters.
I saw Lauren Kennedy as Nellie in London quite a few years ago, and, iamchanging9, she was a quirky Nellie (you can hear it on the cast recording). I thought it worked really well, and even though I think Kelli is amazing, she couldn't even compare to Lauren. So I don't mind a quirky Nellie in the film, and Amy Adams is by far the best choice (She kinda looks like a Nellie in "A Night in The Museum 2" when she plays Amelia Eckhart)

Nellie should not seem older than 25. I don't know if Reese Witherspoon could pull that off at this point. Otherwise she is a great type for Nellie, although I doubt she could sing the score as written. Scarlett is the right age and not the wrong type. With her Tony in tow she might be a producer's dream for this role. Don't know if her voice is right for it.
Szot will hopefully get to repeat his performance for the film. No current star could sing it well enough and most would not want to have it known they were dubbed.
Alec Baldwin as Billis? He is 53. 20 years too old. Zach Galifanakis would be good casting, and he would open the doors for an audience that might not otherwise be interested. He's a very popular comic actor. Jack Black is, too, but he can't act.
Morrison is a good choice for Cable, and with his Glee-based popularity would both fill a few seats for the producers and raise his own clout in the film world. He's only been a bit player in films up until now.
John Slattery would be a great Captain Brackett.
Bloody Mary is a tough role to cast well. May history repeat itself and let Broadway's current Bloody Mary, Loretta Ables Sayre, perform her role on film, this time with her own voice.
Ah, casting! We shall see. I hope this time they get it right on screen.
Michael Cerveris as Emile.
Never gonna happen though.
Javier Bardem as Emile...I assume he can sing since he was the original choice for Guido in Nine...boy did he dodge a bullet.

Bardem is a good choice, if he can sing it. Banderas, too -- he knows how to use his voice quite well, as he's proven. It's a lighter sound than we're used to for Emile, but he definitely has the requisite appeal.
Cerveris? A romantic male lead? Really? He's good, but a little non-descript, even on stage. I don't know how that would play on camera. And isn't he a tenor?
Emile - Antonio Banderas
Nellie - Reese Witherspoon
Cable - Matthew Morrison

Bardem would make a wonderful Emile and he has worked with Johansson in VICKY CHRISTINA BARCELONA, they had wonderful chemistry in that. Would love to see them re-team for this project.

I keep imagining someone like Seth Rogan or Jason Segal as Luther Billis.
As much as I love Scarlett Johansson, I'd have a difficult time seeing her as Nellie. Reese seems a better fit. Though the Amy Adams suggestion is really perfect.
I like the Amy Adams and Antonio idea. Is he a tenor or baritone, though? I can't remember.
I'm seriously loving the Amy Adams idea for Nellie. I think Reese is great but she doesn't really have the voice.
I wasn't crazy about the idea of Amy Adams, as much as I love her, until I thought of how great she'd look and sound singing I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair. Make it happen, Hollywood!
MrMidwest- I probably have the magizine put away somewhere but the year she was nominated for an Oscar they did an photo spread/interview about her getting ready in Entertainment Weekly. And she was talkign about how she sings arias to relax before big shows a long with a quote saying something like "After all, I am an operatic soprano" or w/e. I only remember it because it sounded bitchy.
I love the idea of Jason Segal as Billis but if Zach Galfinikis is going to get involved, I think he would work better for Stewpot. We also know Jason can sing and loves musicals.
I think Amy Adams is a good actress and I loved her in ENCHANTED and DOUBT, but I think she's almost too predictable a choice for Nellie. I get exactly why people think she'd be right and yes she would be, but I think someone like Johansson would be more interesting in the part and perhaps bring something different to the table. Then again, I thought Adams would be somewhat predictable in DOUBT and she really surprised me with some of her choices, so one should never underestimate her.
As far as Mr Midwest's question on an operatic Emile, I think its absolutely necessary. As seen in the half-arsed Glenn Close version, that Mighty Joe Young guy playing Emile was an ABSOLUTE mistake, vocally.
"Some Enchanted Evening" is a Broadway classic that would be completely ruined if done by a pop/modern singer. If the actor does not have the proper baritone to play Emile, they shouldn't be doing it in the first place.
That is my rant. I will surely be not happy if they pick an Emile that cannot sing it correctly.
PS: I will be a happy camper if Amy Adams or Resse gets Nellie :)
onedaymore- I came here to say the same thing. Fill the movie with stars, but Emile has to be a great baritone (if there are any Hollywood stars that fit that category great, if not get big stars in other roles).
The thing that keeps coming to my attention is that this is a Hollywood production so there will be NO real consideration of who neccessarily is BEST for a part but rather what cast can be the biggest draw. Due to this I think:
Nelli Forbush - Anne Hathaway... She is the best of both worlds as she actually has musical theater talent and is currently the hottest "legitimate" young female talent as Amy Adams and Reese are old news at the moment.
Emile - Hugh Jackman!....Yeah I know he is not the right age, but again this is Hollywood. The are focused on who can appeal to the "general" public, not just the theater in-crowd.
Cable - James Marsden...my personal choice as he proved in Hairspray he has musical chops, he has the looks, can fit the age brackett and has a good enough resume to please Hollywood

Maybe they will try for Rod Gilfry as movie Emile since he is kinda a name at least in the oepra world.
I have trouble picturing Scarlett Johansson as being "corny as Kansas in August." Nellie is a bit of a goofball (see the scenes of Mary Martin in the original production). I think that's FAR more important than how young she is. The worst they could do would be to cast some overly-serious dramatic actress in the part who weighs the entire production down like a lead balloon (see the TV movie with Glenn Close).
I think Reese would be a great choice for Nellie.
I also think it's very important that Emile be a singer. A seriously fantastic singer, not a shower singer movie star. They could turn to opera and use Paolo Szot, or they could cast some internationally-known singing star.
But if you start calling on the ranks of celebrities who can "carry a tune," the whole thing will start to smell. I don't need to hear a breathy-vibratoed, pitch-stabilized "Some Enchanted Evening."
Sorry to be behind and not all that informed, but is this actually a project that is planned? Or is this all just wishful thinking? If this is a real possibility, can someone provide more details? This is probably covered in the thread but I'm on my phone and unwilling to wait for it to go back to the OP.
If we're just throwing things out there, I agree with the Amy Adams suggestion. I actually think that would be perfect. Oh, and Paulo too? I would be ecstatic! And Matthew Morrison would be a great choice and great draw after Glee. I'd love to see his choices in that character as I've only seen his replacement on Broadway, Andrew Samonsky, and I really don't care for his portrayal. I can't imagine Matthew Morrison having played it that way.

Emile DeBecque ?
Hugh Jackman and Scarlett Johansson - the chemistry worked in Woody Allen's SCOOP and THE PRESTIGE.
Is it just me, or does anyone else think Hugh singing these SP songs would sound like Willie Nelson singing "To All the Girls I've Known Before ..."

Hugh has sang OKLAHOMA! and CAROUSEL - why not SOUTH PACIFIC?
