Before you all tell me to see Gyspy, I already am seeing it the weekend I'm going to NY. I'm also seeing Shrek, In The Heights, Hairspray (Closing Night), and Chicago (w/ Melora Hardin because I LOVE the Office!) I just need a Saturday matinee show to see...Any suggestions??? I was thinking of South Pacific, but Altar Boyz would be cheaper....
South Pacific is worth every penny. I saw it, and I normally hate the show, but it was one of the highlights of my trip. I highly recommend it. Especially this production with this cast. And Altar Boyz will be around for a while.
South Pacific is worth every penny. You absolutely should see it.
I loved South Pacific, but honestly, I don't think any show on Broadway is worth us$ 125, that's ALOT of money. I'd recommend you to see The Fantasticks, since I don't care for Altar Boyz.
But between South Pacific and Altar Boyz, definitly South Pacific! You can't even compare them.

Even without seeing it (and I haven't and want to), I'd recommend "South Pacific." However, if that doesn't pan out, "Altar Boyz" is a LOT of fun (I've seen it four times) and if you can find a discount code through Playbill, Travel Zoo, TKTS etc, a lot cheaper.

Definitely South Pacific! I've seen both in NYC. Altar Boyz is fun, but SP is, to me, a true Broadway experience. I describe the whole production in one word - beautiful. The sets, the music, the actors, the direction - all beautiful, and a real night or afternoon at the theatre!!!! Color me jealous - I wish I were going to NYC again.
NO comparison. Altar Boyz is fun. And easily forgotten. (But if you do you'll have a good time.)
But SP is, perhaps, the closest thing to theatrical perfection I have ever seen. As another poster said, going into it, I was not the biggest SP fan, and, in fact, almost gave up my seat to see something else...and I was totally won over.
**** POSSIBLE SPOILER **** I think the beauty of the production lies in the fact that without changing the script, they were SO able to bring the racism to the foreground in ways I've never seen achieved before with this piece. So touching and heartbreaking, so ever present. It is one of the few shows I've ever seen that I found to be truly FLAWLESS.
HOWEVER, at this late date tickets for SP may be very difficult to obtain for next weekend. I would think near impossible. But, EVERY bit worth the money!!
If you're looking for a little cheaper go with something that's Off Broadway. Like everyone else said Altar Boyz is a lot of fun. I also must second muscle23ftl and recommend The Fantasticks. It's absolutely wonderful and timeless. But if you're willing to shell out $125 to see South Pacific, do it!
Can you even get a ticket for South Pacific at this time? I had to purchase about 8 weeks in advance to get tickets all the way at the back of the Loge.
Try to get standing room for Billy Elliot. LOVED that!
You can do the cancellation line, and get tickets to South Pacific for 125.
