Spamalot v. Spelling Bee
Spamalot v. Spelling Bee#1

Okay, I have one day to choose either of these shows. I'm taking my boyfriend who loved Avenue Q. He says he thinks the Monty Python Holy Grail movie is funny, but didnt watch Monty Python's Flying CIrcus shows..Spelling Bee is just generally funny, and for immaturity I believe he'd like the concepts.
Now, for the Bee I'd get the 50$ tix..are they worth it?
And for Spamalot I'd get the balcony 39$ tix..rear balcony..is that worth it?
Which to choose?! Please help a college student out!! :)

I've seen Spamalot, not the Bee yet...I believe I'll enjoy either.
Are the rear balcony seats in the Shubert that bad?

No, I've sat there any they're not that bad.
See Spamalot! It's a really really fun night at the theatre.

Posted: 8/5/07 at 11:59pmSee Spelling Bee! It's so unique. I didn't love Spamalot. I thought it was mildly funny ... but I enjoyed Spelling Bee a lot more. I kind of felt like Spamalot was just the movie on stage ... same jokes that everyone has already heard.

Posted: 8/6/07 at 12:00amThat is a funny question! I saw Spamalot at the Shubert in Chicatgo and the upper seats are fine. I have only been to the Shubert in NY once, and it seemed like a small house, so I assume the rear balcony seats are fine.

Posted: 8/6/07 at 3:16amSee Spelling Bee. It's fresh, and the jokes aren't as recycled (not that Spamalot is bad - it's just more familiar). Spelling Bee is absolutely hilarious.

Since Spamalot is based mainly from the Holy Grail movie I think he'd like that.
I haven't seen the new cast of Spelling Bee, but I've heard mixed things about it. I guess if you haven't seen it at all, it's funny. But for me it just doesn't hold up on repeat viewings. I was pretty bored the last time I saw it.
I'd go with Spamalot.
LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!

Spelling Bee. I love the Holy Grail movie and Spamalot was just dissapointing. It was the movie + the lady of the lake - my favorite parts. They kind of ripped off FB as well. See the bee. Also there isn't a bad seat in the house at Circle in the Square, where as the Shubert is full of partial view seats.

Posted: 8/6/07 at 8:20amI've seen Spelling Bee 3 times in a year. Spamalot only once. SPELLING BEE!!!!
re: Spamalot v. Spelling Bee#14
Posted: 8/6/07 at 8:24amI would strongly recommend Spelling Bee. Frankly, I was disappointed with Spamalot, and found it the weakest of the nominated musicals that year (others were Spelling Bee, Light in the Piazza, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels; I enjoyed them all MUCH more than Spamalot).

Spamalot definitely.
I saw and enjoyed both shows, but Spamalot is overall the more fun and flashy show (if that is what you want). Plus if he enjoyed the movie...I don't think the fact that he didn't watch Flying Circus should affect his enjoyment of the show...as long as he saw the movie.

Posted: 8/6/07 at 10:53amI liked Spelling Bee marginally better than I liked Spamalot, rather in the same way that Clive Barnes liked Follies marginally better than he liked Company. Stick to spelling Bee, however, I wouldn't go to either ever again.

Just saw the new Spelling Bee cast. They were very good, but they play their characters more kid-like and toned down. They are far different from the OBC. You can get decently priced good seats for Spelling Bee (using a discount code), and I would rather be close than far away. For that reason, I would choose Spelling Bee. That and the fact that I think one of my acting teachers from years ago is an understudy.

I've seen them both and preferred Spamalot. I didn't think I was going to like Spamalot, but I took my dad for his birthday and we both ended up loving it. I thought Spamalot was a lot funnier than Spelling Bee, although I enjoyed Bee. Just thinking of sitting through "The I Love You Song" again is enough to chase me away from seeing Bee again. I highly recommend Spamalot. We sat in the balcony and had no problems. They were good seats for a great price.

Posted: 8/6/07 at 11:41pmI highly recommend Spelling Bee. Good seats no matter what, a great cast in my opinion, and a far superior score...at least to my ears.
