My roommate just got home and told me she heard on the radio an announcement that Spider-Man was closing? Anyone else hear this? She was so impressed that she had Broadway news that I didn't have!

"Seriously? When it's still taking in over a million a week?"

That at all depends. If the running costs are actually at the rumored 1.25 million per week then taking in less than that (which they have been for many of the last few week) means they are not paying off any of that very, very large initial investment and are eating into their reserve to keep the show running.

It would cost more money to close it, move the set, and fix the theatre up than it would to just keep it open at a loss.

SPIDERMAN may have running costs of about $1.2 million per week but that is at full royalties. I am sure the participants contracts allow for reduced royalties (and rent) if the show doesn't hit its weekly nut.

The summer tourist season is almost upon us so SPIDERMAN should have a nice bump and its not as though there are a dozen shows begging to get into the Foxwoods Cavern (I mean, theatre).

Why do you suppose your friend lied to you?

And with the Taymor settlement over with I'm pretty sure the press release stated that royalties were in fact being reduced to lower weekly running costs.

My friend told me it was closing also before I realized I didn't have a friend that told me that it was closing so I was happy that it was not closing since all those actors would be out of danger, I mean work.

Packing it up and tenting it out on the road.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."
