Colle: I can appreciate a pretty song too. Actually I can appreciate a lot of music that doesn't have "excitement." But it also has to be good. For me, this song wasn't. Considering all the bad publicity this show has been getting and the fact that this was a prime chance for them to really showcase a solid number from the revamped version, they completely missed the mark. I was considering seeing the show when I went to NYC this summer. But in my opinion, on the Tony's, shows typically feature one of their best numbers. If this was one of Spiderman's best numbers, that show is definitely off my list.

@hmpeterson -- The show is PHENOMENAL and most definitely worth seeing! This was one of my favorite numbers from the musical though I disliked the way that they altered the song to let Reeve sing more. It was not in his range and sounds ten times better when sung by Jennifer Damiano alone.

the show also has a few show-stopping numbers, "Boy Falls From the Sky" "Rise Above" "I Just Can't Walk Away"

Yeah, I enjoy Reeve's voice on all the other songs, but it just felt like this one wasn't working for his voice.

I think what's funny is that on here for ages people have been saying that the song they performed on the Tony Awards was one of the best songs in the show (along with Rise Above), so they then go and perform that song and now everyone slams them again (well on here that is)

"The song is better than "I Believe." "I Believe isn't funny and it's a one idea song that doesn't develop."

You're trying to be funny, right? I Believe starts as a serious sort of "this is my belief as a Mormon" and then starts getting funny as the more bizarre ideas are added. Who can not laugh at 'I believe ancient Jew tribes built boats and sailed to upstate New York"? Even the Mormon family sitting next to us laughed at that!
Then it develops into even more bizarre beliefs to the point where he is with the natives and explains the beliefs including the year the belief was changed that blacks weren't turned black as punishment (in other words -- our beliefs change when needed to save our own skin) just as he's doing with the natives. Not develop? Surely you jest. Not funny? Do you have NO sense of humor?

Now I won't say if the song from Spidey develops or not. I think I nodded off within the first minute. I do remember coming back to reality at the end and the four of us watching the show all looked at each other and almost in unison said, "YAWN". Dull. That sums it up totally.

songanddanceman2, the problem is the show changed this song from a really great moment for Jennifer Damiano to a duet that doesn't work as well because it's out of Reeve's vocal range. I don't think the changes were needed and actually detract from the song. Then again, I actually liked 1.0 (I'm a sucker for the conventions of Greek drama and Taymor went overboard with them), so what do I know at this point?

It's a different context, but it's kind of like how they had the young boy take the Interlocutor's lines in The Scottsboro Boys performance at the Tonys. It shouldn't make that big a difference, but it does. It re-contextualized the song in unexpected ways that aren't necessarily better. Someone who didn't see the original production wouldn't know anything was changed, but for the people who did it wasn't necessarily a welcome change.

The only thing that was different was that Reeve sang on some of the song, im not really sure how that suddenly made the song boring?

People who haven't seen the show undoubtedly think of it as a rock and roll circus act. And they aren't wrong. But in choosing If the World Should End, I'm sure the creative team wanted to show the millions watching that it's more than that...that it has a heart as well.

What fascinates me is that everyone I talk to, and seemingly everyone on this board, keep mentioning new favorite songs. If you look back to the beginning of this, the consensus was that the score was a mess and the only song worth anything was Boy Falls. Well then Rise Above started getting attention. And then If the World Should End. And then No More, Picture This and Walk Away. And now it seems everyone has a different favorite song.

That's a great omen for this thing. I don't know how the play is going to do, but after listening to the full OBCR this morning at the gym, I can say that like all scores, there are a few songs I skip over, but the bulk of this thing is very, very good and will endure beyond the play's run on Broadway.

That song is BORING, songanddanceman. I know you're pinning all your Carrie-like hopes and dreams and well wishes into Spidey's basket right now, but Christ.

I've seen the show twice now -- first time just before hiatus and second time the final preview. The new song on the fire escape is totally ZZZZZZ. The show has not improved on the whole, although thankfully the Green Goblin has more to do. I can't say I have any new favorite songs, but I'm glad that fun guitar riff is still prominent (in the fight scene and "Boy Falls From the Sky").

Reeve looked petrified and sounded like ass. Every time I see him perform I can't help but imagine there is a picture of him getting more and more talented locked away in Julie Taymor's attic...

You really are a tit, especially for an 'adult'
Why the Carrie comment (oh right, because i think the show has a shot and you don't).
All im saying is all ive heard recently is everyone likes that song, it's one of the better song's etc, then they do that song and everyone suddenly hates it. It just makes me laugh, thats all.

I have no burning desire to see Spider Man, i just think things on this board are funny and predicatble when it comes to the show.

Now stop being so nasty Namo or you are in danger of a house falling on you.

"the show also has a few show-stopping numbers, "Boy Falls From the Sky" "Rise Above" "I Just Can't Walk Away" "

then why didn't they do those? isn't the whole Tony Awards performance to show how awesome your show is?

so many questions.............

You know, it's not a record, songanddanceman. It was a live performance. Why do you have this disconnect between the fact that SOME people who have seen the show and some who have listened to the recording (not everybody as you keep saying) say the song is great, and then MOST say the Tony version was boring at best? Both things can be true. I'm not sure why this flabbergasts you so.

And yes, I think there is a similarity in your wish fulfilment of Carrie and your loyalty to Bono and The Edge's whims despite all evidence that they have pretty much lost it.

Namo, what are you talking about?

And as for loyality to Bono and Te Edge......i could name about 4 U2 songs, i have zero loyality to them, i just like much of what ive heard in the show (some is crap, a lot is good). I guess i just don't like jumping on a bandwagon as many seem to have on THIS site. As i say i have no burning desire to see this show (my next trip to NY with my fella does not have Spider Man down as one of the shows we are seeing, we are coming for The Normal Heart) i just have a lot of respect for the people working on that show as i know first hand how hard it is to create theatre, especially when everyone is looking at you to fail.

As for Carrie, you don't think it has a chance, i do, get over it, people who don't agree with you should not be made to feel s**t because you think you know best and must have the final say on things.

I'm assuming you and your "fella" already have tix for The Normal Heart, yes?

Otherwise, you might as well stay home and create more of your brand of theater. I know precious few of us here can even imagine how hard it is to create theater. Thanks for sharing. ugh.
