I'm shocked this is happening considering their pitiful numbers at the box office.

The tour of this has always done better than the Broadway incarnations. Not shocked at all.

Well, considering there has only one bway incarnation, this means nothing.

 

And just how did the tour do better on your than the original bway run....which recouped in something like 9 months

Considering the multiple national tours that went out and some successful long-term sit down runs regionally years after the original Broadway production closed I'd say that was a pretty fair assessment to make.

It's a totally fair assessment. The show's got hype but hasn't done well with long runs. A fervent but limited audience, with ticket prices what they are.

Saw it on Broadway a couple of months ago and was blown away! Really amazing production. How far in advance do tours usually announce the cities they'll be stopping in?

I imagine a lot of the driving force behind this is a desire to be better remembered come award time, and I wonder if this tour will actually pan out. Will subscriber audiences around the country be open to another production of this show so shortly after the original tour played their towns? Many of them will likely assume it's the exact same staging they saw just a few years ago.

I don't know about this. I remember going to se the original tour in my hometown on a major subscription based night, and the theatre emptied by about half, as the content wasn't for the "blue haired" subscription base.

^ This...you can't compare the length if a tour with throwing of the bway show.  .so many more cities to perform in.  Pretty sure it was only here on Boston once, and did not sell amazingly well. It did "fine" but nothing outstanding.

The biggest part is my post took issue with the poster saying the tours always did better than all the incarnations when there was only one on Broadway -  makes the statement ridiculous.

Any individual runs have nothing to do with the tour or the original production.

I think the only ones who wouldn't tour are Marliee, Cameron, and Patrick. Especially the latter. Mr. Page seems to be a fairly sought after actor right now.

By time this makes it to most cities it will have been almost  decade since the first tour. It's not that recent.

Well the majority of touring houses are most likely newer so they could be accessible. Also who said that this would be equity?

I wouldn't go as far to say that most touring house are new. Many of those I can think of are old. However, how many shows annouce tours and never go. I think that if they are smart they will look at what markets the show did decent to well in, and go from there.

I think most theaters are accessible for the audience members, but I'm not sure that extends to the backstage typically.

This would make sense if they were launching the tour immediately following the closing of the Broadway revival... but I don't think a 2017 tour will allow for remembrance come 2015-2016 Tony Awards time...

This revival is up there with the 2013 Pippin revival IMO. You have to see it. It's beautiful.

That's not what I meant. Many touring presenters are Tony voters, and touring presenters want to bring award winning productions to their audiences. Tours are booked incredibly far out, and if this will actually be coming to fruition, you can bet that it's already being programmed now. Putting those elements together, presenters who are also voters and who have booked this tour for their town will have more of an incentive for recognizing Spring Awakening on their ballots. It all comes down to selling tickets.

Both the first and second national tours did better than the OBC and the revival. If you couldn't count, that's TWO incarnations on Broadway and TWO touring incarnations, going on three. How is my statement ridiculous? Why do you refuse to count the revival as an incarnation of the show? Please tell me.

Are you talking about the current revival?  And comparing the tour that has ALREADY HAPPENED to THIS production?  How does that translate to a more successful tour of THIS? 

 

Since this production did FAR worse (financially) than the original, why would you expect the tour to repeat it's  predecessor?

(And I still don't buy that the tours were more successful)

You took everything I said out of context. I didn't claim the tour would do better than the current revival. I said both tours did better financially than the current revival and the OBC, and that's just a cold hard fact. You don't need to buy anything, it's in the history books and gross archives. Do a little research and read things a couple of times before you start foolishly attacking a fact that everyone else here seems to know. I hope you have a good morning.
