Hey guys, I need some help.
The theatre director at my school is having a hard time choosing a show for next year. She wants a show with a lot of guys, since we are losing a lot of our female talent this year. We have a ton of guys that can sing, act, and dance, and we have a lot of girls that can dance, a few that can act really well, but not very many that can sing and be a lead in a show. She's considering The Producers, since the rights are now available, but we don't know if we could afford it.
Does anyone have any suggestions? To give you some kind of idea of what shows we have done in the past: Crazy For You, Guys and Dolls, 42nd Street (complete with the tap dancing, one of the best shows we've ever done) and we did The Music Man this year. The casts for the shows are typically anywhere between 50-60 people. Our drama club is pretty broke, since we are completely independently funded and get no money from the administration or town, but we still put on quality high school productions.
If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated!!

How to Succeed: Tons of guy roles and only requires one strong female singer, the other two female leads can be character parts, and while they'll need to sing it won't have to be great.

I would say "How to Suceed..." or "The Scarlet Pimpernel" would be your best bets.

Depending on how well you can pull of technical stuff, but SINGIN' IN THE RAIN might be a good choice. Terrific male roles, lots of dancing, and it's a fun show.

Also, depending on how good some of your girls are, maybe BEAUTY AND THE BEAST? You need some strong females, but it's a very guy heavy show.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

I concur with "How to succeed...", a local high school put that on 2 years ago - it was fabulous, my son was Concertmaster in the Pit.
Another possibility is "Oklahoma" - lots of cowboys dancing up a storm.
I agree also with West Side Story -

Thank you all for the suggestions so far, guys! I think H2$ is a high possibility. Since there are so many people that are usually involved in the musical, I think a musical with a big cast would be best.
Thanks again!

I also suggest West Side Story.

H2$ is a good suggestion. My Fair Lady also has lots of dancing, lots of male roles and only one real female lead. Same with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat though people tend to either love it or hate it.

I agree with the How to Succeed.. suggestion because, although I've only heard the music, it seems like a really fun show but now I have a question of my own.

Can that show work if you were to change many of the male roles to female ones? Not the lead male role but others? We lack the gentlemen at my high school, haha.

I would go with H2$.
Someone mentioned Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, but I would suggest that if you care about your students' opinion of the show, avoid "Joseph" at all costs. Speaking as a high school student, everyone I know that has put on that show has hated it.

I agree that "Scarlet Pimpernel" would be a great choice.
