How is it? I've never seen the show before and I am looking for cheap tickets to see it this Sunday! The seats I found are Center Balcony Row B. Thanks alot, I really appreciate it!

If you have a student ID they have a rush.
The balcony seats are dreadful in the St. James.
It's terrible. The entire balcony is awful.
Thank God the performances of the people in Gypsy were amazing because the balcony seats are bad...

The balcony is incredibly high up in the St. James...I sat mid-mezz and just for fun walked up to the balcony. You are climbing to Mt. Everest. Nothing blocking your view...but you may need the binoculars if you have any interest in seeing facial expressions.

horrible...i really dont suggest doing it...and if for some reason you dont get center you might have railings in the way of the stage, and its so freaking high. it really ruined my experience...the show was great tho so i would advise you to try to get better seats
I saw Gypsy from the first row of the balcony on the right side and the view was fine. I enjoyed the show. It is quite a haul making it up to the balcony though. If it's the only way you can afford to go to the show then I say do it. If I only went to see shows when I could afford to pay for orchestra seats then I would never go to a broadway show. Thank God for discount codes!
The legroom in that balcony is terrible.
Yeah...and it's not on enough of a slant. You basically can only see the orchestra if you sit back fully. You have to totally lean forward in order to see the performers.
I'll NEVER sit up there again.

Geeze, times have changed!
When I was in my teens and early 20's there were no student rushes. The TKTS Booth wasn't even a dream at that point. On a limited budget, the only seats I could afford were in the balcony. As the original production of HELLO, DOLLY! played at the St. James, I sat up there many, many times.
I never complained about legroom or sightlines. That's what I could afford. Now that I'm retired and living on a pension, I might still climb up to the balcony (good cardiac exercise!) if I wanted to see a particular show and funds were low.
The younger generation has really gotten spoiled.
How does the institution of student rush make our generation spoiled? Why wouldn't be take advantage of it if we're students and we love the theater?
Also, the student rush seats are front row...I'd much rather pay $27 for front row seats than $41 to sit in the balcony and miss 3/4 of the stage action.
And for me, if I'm paying ANY amount of money (even if its $40 for the balcony) to see a Broadway show, I'd like to be able to see the performers.

When I first started going to the theatre I saw Hello Dolly, The Pajama Game, Luther, Barnum, etc. from the 2nd Balcony of the St. James. I never minded the climb or the view. It was all I could afford---other than standing room. The same held true at the Lyceum, Cort, Shubert, etc. We seem to have a new generation of theatre lovers who are out-of-shape and nearsighted
When we have the option for cheaper and BETTER seats, of course we're going to take them. And to compare a front row seat to a bad balcony seat will of course draw out the negatives of a seat in the balcony.
It's not that we're spoiled, we just aren't going to settle for bad seats when we know we can get something better. It's called being a smart buyer, getting the most for our money. If there isn't a rush or discount tickets for a show I want to see, I will happily sit in whatever seat I can afford, even balcony.

I sat up there for The Producers...yes, it was a climb, but I could see almost everything...the only time you really had to lean forward was when Gary Beach sat along the edge of the stage.
I'm sitting up there again for Gypsy...I am aware that they are not the greatest seats, or the cheapest, but I am coming in from out of town with a group of friends, and just being there is worth the time and effort. I am so excited about this.
I don't think anyone is saying that people shouldn't try to get the best bang for their buck when buying theatre tickets. I think what we're saying is if you are not a student and the balcony is the most affordable seat you can get, then go for it. You should still have a good time.

I saw The Producers from up there, and it was not half bad. Then again, Gypsy is a very different show, and I'd suggest getting as close as possible, even if it's off to the side, to watch Patti, and Laura Benanti as well (Little Lamb starts out on the right).

Didn't want to start a new thread for this, but how is the last row of the mezzanine? And how is it compared to first row of the balcony? Thanks so much!

Sitting in the balcony ruined Gypsy for me, I was constantly trying to see the downstage area to no avail. Awful awful awful. Spend the extra money and sit somewhere else. Trust me, it's worth it.
