That said, I vote for Benanti...
I think benati is a good choice.
Vocally and physically.

isn't she already doing the wedding singer?
I vote for Susan Egan as Mary.
I'm quite ceratain that Wedding Singer will be long forgotten by the time Poppins opens.

there have been a million other threads on this topic, however, since i like this rumor i'll add. kate winslet is looking at a potential broadway debut with this show. i think she would be magical.
(I think) I'm agreeing with Gretch and saying Erin Dilly!

YAY!!! You have very good taste:p
I think Erin is perfect vocally and physically! She's amazing!
Well I am unsure if this character is supposed to have a certain age but I could see Joanna Gleason as Mary Poppins. Again, I am not familiar with this project that much but she is a great singer and could pull of the character well. But again, I dont know if age is a issue.
I could also see Charolette D'Amboise doing it but she already has A Chorus Line so I guess that takes her out of the picture.
I'd be happy with half a dozen names listed here - Laura Benanti would certainly be better as the stoic Poppins than as Julia in the WEDDING SINGER - Kate Winslet is a goddess and can do no wrong - Marla Schaffel is a fantastic singing actress.
Can't really get behind Susan Egan or Erin Dilly though - they'd be fine, but I think the production can do better.
Is it wrong for me to hope it's Erin just so Gretch gets to see her perform again?? It sounds like such a fun show!
I have to agree with laura benanti as well. It does seem like Poppins would be better than Julia in Wedding Singer. julia seems like a waste of Benanti's talents. I don't know. Either her or Susan egan would be fine by me.
Well, if we can't get Laura Michelle Kelly, I'd go with a rather odd choice- Victoria Clark. Yes, she has a son and is currently playing the mother of a 20 year old on Broadway, but in the original books, Poppins was not in her 20s. She was in her mid 30s to early 40s. Ms. Clark also has the acting chops to pull it off, as well as the voice. However, she will most likely take a well deserved break after "Piazza"'s run is finished.
Well, Poppins or not, I'm sure Erin Dilly will perform again somewhere...maybe at the Stage Coach Community Theatre as MISS SAIGON, mind you, but I'm sure she'll perform again somewhere...

I never even thought of that. What a good idea! I think she'd actually be pretty perfect. Like you said though, she'll probably take a break after Piazza.
Guys guys guys...I hate to burst your bubble.
But, I'm pretty sure Disney is in talks with Toni Braxton to play the role.
All the songs are being taken down about five octaves.
Please tell me you're joking...
Idina Menzel has officially signed on to play Mary Poppins!
They're going to have her fly into the window on a cherry picker.
What about Sandy Duncan? She acts. She sings. She flies. AND she Wheat Thins in HER carpet bag.
What about Cher?...I hear she wants to come back to Broadway.
