'Stepping Out' In The West End

'Stepping Out' In The West End
I cant believe its 25 years since the original production of 'Stepping Out' opened at the Duke Of Yorks!

Its coming back!
A new production opens in December that will tour for 11 weeks and then find a West End home in the New Year.
It stared a brilliant cast headed by Julia McKenzie and Diane Langton.
Names booked for the new production include Jessie Wallace from 'Eastenders' and Richard Capron from 'Coronation Street.'

The original art work for the play was a wonderful piss take of the '42nd Street' poster that was all over London and had just opened at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane!
You would see both posters everywhere around London!

The play opened at the Duke Of Yorks and ran for 4 sell out years. A revival at the Strand Theatre (now The Novello) in 1990 ran for 1 year.
In 1997 it was made into a musical that played the Albery (now The Cowerd) but it just didn't seem to sit right as a musical and closed after just 3 months.
A CD was made of the musical.

The movie version with Julie Walters, Liza Minnelli and Shelly winters was a pretty lame adaption.

re: 'Stepping Out' In The West End

I loved the original production of "Stepping Out" which I saw twice, although the magic died slightly when I spotted one of the actresses catching the bus home after the show! The musical version of the show (what was that all about) was a total travesty.

Rosemary Ashe is in it too playing Mrs Fraser, the pianist. Think it is Brian Capron. Richard was his character in The Street.

This play was a big hit in Australia as well and came back a couple of times in revivals.

I liked the film but haven't seen it on stage which is probably the reason lol.

I rather liked the movie but, as is usually the case, it works even better as a stage play. I saw the musical too - with the lovely Liz Robertson. Unfortunately the score just wasn't memorable enough to make it work. Kander and Ebb wrote a fabulous title song for the film - shame they didn't write the score for the stage musical!

Ah, great to have this back. Hope it swings into London. Wouldn't be suprised is Cameron picks it up for a season with Rosie Ashe involved.

I loved the movie, Liza was stellar, her dance solo was phenomenal, she was on 'FIRE'. I also loved the song Stepping Out, it took me years to track down a copy of the recording.

See the movie, it is very worthwhile...
The great thing with human brains is they're fanless, nice and quiet although I'm sure mine whistles a bit sometimes.
