Yup that's why I feel so terrible for him. Given the year that he's had, with the loss of his mother and his breakup with Megan Hilty, this show seems like it's definitely the bright spot in his life. To have to leave it on an involuntary basis (it seems) must be devastating for him.
I would imagine them bumping up Ben Hope to "Guy" full-time was a last minute decision. If Kazee did indeed extend his contract before he got sick, I doubt the producers were looking for someone new to play "Guy". They recently have been holding open calls, but I doubt there was enough time to bring in someone new and have them completely ready by March 26. I would also hope that when Kazee is completely healthy if he comes back to the show for 3-6 months again. I wish him a speedy recovery.
"That IS actually unreasonable. His first priority it to his health. Not fans of his or the show. If he's on vocal rest there is no reason he should put himself, his voice and his future in harms way cause a few people wanted to see him perform again. The expectation is what's unreasonable."
You definitely misread my post. I was saying for a fan who doesn't obsessively stalk Steve Kazee's life, it is reasonable for them to expect to see him when they attend the show. Especially if that show is his final performance. Also, according to everything I've heard, vocal rest has NOTHING to do with why he isn't there. Which is fine, he needs to take care of himself and his life, but I just want to point out I am in no way suggesting he do something that damages his voice permanently.
I'm sorry, I know shows will never do it because it's a money-loser and makes them look bad, but I really do hate that people will spent hundreds of dollars on tickets, flights, hotels, etc. just dying to see a performer they love and end up so disappointed. Things happen, it can't be prevented, and most times I think you don't stay disappointed because the show is usually wonderful anyway, but I do have quite a few friends who were absolutely dying to see his performance and tried multiple times over the past six months and failed each time. Nothing you can do, but unfortunate.

This is SO random but I have been following the whole "where is steve kazee" story because I'm honestly hoping he returns and is okay..but regarding his absence from social media (ala twitter and instagram, as his followers know how often he posts) is it possible that he is religious and gave up social networking for lent? i mean, from what i understand, lent began february 13. steve's last posts on twitter are feb 14...just a thought. that would back up the whole "vocal rest" gossip and could explain why he hasn't been tweeting.

I must say that when I saw Once a couple of months ago I was really upset to get to the theatre and discover Steve Kazee was off........until I actually watched Ben Hope's beautiful performance. I thought he was brilliant, and am so pleased he is taking over full-time.
I hope rush isn't too insane this week. When have people been getting there?

It is inexcusable at this point for the show not to have made a formal public announcement about Kazee's prolonged absence. He is the Tony winner and the show is the Tony winner. People simply need to know that he is out for good. This could have happened weeks ago with a simple public announcement. Instead, the show's producers have kept people guessing. By doing so, they hope those same people won't ask for refunds with Kazee out. Very poorly played by all, and unacceptable in a Broadway market with tickets prices well over $100/seat.

I think some of the songs he had to sing must have hurt his voice. Glen Hansard doesn't sing his songs eight performances a week.
I'm hoping his voice returns to normal. And that maybe he will return to Once at some point for a month to make up for time he had to miss recently.
Ok. Even if you are incapable of reading between the lines on this thread... OY!
His @ mentions are pretty intense.
I've never been more thankful posts in a thread are gone. It was getting despicable, guys.

Not sure why this site even bothers having a message board. But whatever.
Maybe "Once" will be a better show for getting a new lead actor.
I'm surprised he's just now having vocal rest. He's been doing the show for awhile. I wonder if he'd been having trouble, but sort of singing over the pain because of the Tonys, etc.
Maybe he got lazy in the role and stopped using any sort of technique? I don't know. It just seems weird to be doing a role for a year, and then suddenly be put on vocal rest?
Laura Bell Bundy probably could have gone on some vocal rests near the end of her Legally Blonde run
You people...
Yeah? I wonder how that happens. You would think after winning a Tony you could get a better vocal coach then maybe who you had before, and you would have created some sort of system by now like get up, workout, show, rest, show, rest, or something. Who knows.
