Steve Kazee is leaving Once!

No one knows seems to know for sure why he's out of the show. It's pointless to talk about vocal rest or vocal wear and tear since those aren't confirmed, and it's possibly just as damaging to his future career as speculating about anything else. Maybe the mods should just delete the whole thread.

Steve Kazee is leaving Once!

I don't understand how Ethel Merman's throat started bleeding one night in Gypsy. Wasn't she singing for like 40 years before that?

And it was that night Ethel invented Gene Simmons's blood spitting routine. Said Ethel, "Chaim, ya gotta have a gimmick."

I can't wait for someone to stage a show based on her life, but have her character born in 1963.

I always liked when Ethel served her special stuffed cabbage recipe to Lew Marie, Ann Marie, and Donald Hollinger. Good times.

They actually screened one of the episodes in which she did that at a Bernie Kopell film festival a few years ago.

Has anyone spoken to Aimee about this?!?! Is she ok?

Oh, you mean superfan Aimee of the NY Times article? Maybe she's moved on to a different show. Once wasn't her only multiple show viewing.

No, I was referring to this Aimee.

How is Steve doing with his rehabilitation?

Vocal rehabilitation takes how long?

Very sad to watch the video of the 1 year anniversary performance and think that Steve Kazee wasn't there to be able to share the moment with the cast. And also a bit surprising that there was no mention of him during the speech.

Steve Kazee is leaving Once!

I feel like the fact that they are pretending Steve doesn't exist, especially during such a significant time as the one year anniversary is, amongst many other things, extremely awkward...

I really do think it's pretty gross that the show hasn't addressed it in any way at all. I'm not saying they need to give the real reason (obviously it's a personal one), but I do find it pretty deceptive and irritating.

I was there last night, Ben Hope was in of course. Though I noticed they put the understudy slip on the first page after the cover, not in the middle near the cast info like usual. In that spot you don't even notice it's in there. I turned to the middle like normal and didn't see it so was like, woah Steve is back?? Checked the cast listing to see maybe it had Hope on for a certain period of time, wasn't there, then rummaged through the pages and found the slip on the first page. Think they purposely do that hoping people won't find it? haha

I would have been like woah too. I am absolutely sure they did what they did for exactly the reason you describe. What else could it be? They KNOW nobody reads a book or magazine from page one on.

Considering it was on the understudy board in the lobby as plain as day, I highly doubt they were trying to dupe anybody...

This is all a bit shady. Reminds me of when Jared Gertner played Cunningham for a few days this summer when he was rehearsing for the BoM tour, but the cast (seemingly) wasn't allowed to tweet about it.

@FindingNamo
I feel like you may be sarcastic based on that last sentence, so I'll say no I don't read playbills from page one on because I know the part about the show is in the middle.

Also, with the chaos in the lobby as everyone herds in, I don't think everyone is looking around for the understudy board.

Steve Kazee is leaving Once!

I doubt they're trying to hide anything from patrons at the theatre, but I do believe there's a whole lot of shady sh*t going on regarding discussing his absence publicly.

They should've just announced that Ben Hope would be taking over as of...whenever they knew Kazee would not be back.

So maybe they were only trying to fool the serious regular theatergoers who know the show info is in the middle! Maybe they wanted the casual theatergoers to know Ben Hope was on. Although, don't regulartheatergoers look at the understudy board in the theater lobbies?

Isn't it most likely an usher just got lazy and stopped caring where the insert in the playbill (if caring at all is important, which I doubt anyway?)
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
