She's attracted such huge attention, basically, because of the enormous contrast between
her looks and her voice. She turned up wearing resolutely unstylish clothing, wearing little make-up, and with a decidedly dowdy-looking perm - she looked older than she is, and when she was interviewed before she sang she came across as a very nice, slightly eccentric, somewhat unsophisticated and rather nervous lady whose general
demeanour set up a distinct impression that she wasn't going to do very well in front of that particular panel of judges..... And then Ms. Boyle opened her mouth and sang...her voice is
very, very strong (and sounds like it comes from someone who looks quite different), and, more than that, there was, despite her obvious lack of skill at interpreting lyrics, an astonishing emotional force behind her performance. She brought the audience to their feet through the sheer force of her *personality* as well as her voice, and she really didn't look like someone who would be able to do that. Her performance was an object lesson in why it's wrong to judge a book by the cover.

Sounds like 1962 Barbra Streisand.
