Do you think the new broadway revival will have a full orchestra in the cd?

I can't imagine that it would. There isn't a full orchestra in the show.

It will be as true to the music on stage as possible I'd think. Otherwise, what's the point? Updated On: 11/8/05 at 10:52 AM

But will they add back in the parts for kazoo and slide whistle that were cut in previews?

i think it would sound amazing with a full orchestra. But yes, they should remain true to the show.

Speculation: It is being recorded on the 14th, for release sometime soon after that. The holidays, maybe?

Yeah, it sounds amazing with a full orchestra...on the original Broadway cast recording. As others here have stated, what would be the point of recording the full orchestrations, when part of the appeal of the current production is the way it sounds and how it is performed?

It's being recorded with only the ten actor-musicians that are in the cast -- no extra musicians or sweetening of any kind. Nonesuch is attempting replicate as closely as possible the sound in the theatre. Unfortunately, it won't be a complete recording, but just a single disc highlights CD.

This is the kind of production that strikes me as perfect for a live recording.

The option of a live recording was discussed, but abandoned as being too expensive. It'll be a traditional studio recording.

That's too bad. I was really looking forward to this recording, but I'm not a fan of the "Highlights" CDs even when there is a full version available. Is it too much to hope that if it is very successful they might release a complete recording eventually?

I've never understood how one could do "highlights" from this show...as if there are points where the show drags.

My hope (and I don't know if it's been decided yet if they'll do it or not) is that once they're in the studio, they'll record the entire show and then archive what won't fit on a single disc. If it sells well, perhaps they could later issue what remains as a bonus disc or something (or offer it as a download on the website). It wouldn't be THAT much more expensive to go ahead and record the 20-30 minutes of music that wouldn't fit on one disc.

:prays DLC will be on this CD::

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

DLC?

I too am disappointed that it will only be a highlight CD. I hope I'm not offending you Margo by asking if you had reliable sources. And why would a live recording be more expensive then a in studio? that seems weird, unless I'm missing something!

I'm hazy on some of these details, but you can only record a certain amount of music during a session. I believe the figure is 15 minutes of material over the period of a three hour session. Most shows are able to do four sessions in a day, recording at most an hour of music (four sessions, 15 minutes apiece).

This CRUSHED me. Im so upset, how can you even attempt to pick highlights from the show? I was mostly hoping to have those obscure musical moments captured on cd, like Sweeneys letter to judge turpin sounded so different from the OBC and I liked it so much better but that certainly wouldnt. I guess I could live without the many reprises of the Ballads. But c'mon, ugh this is terrible

But at least we get SOMETHING instead of nothing(or everything re: Sweeney Todd CD )

Frankly, I wish that Great Performances would film it for broadcast, like they did for the concert version, but given the deep cuts to PBS's budget they probably couldn't justify the expense of another SWEENEY taping so soon. How about HBO? Or Showtime or Bravo?

I have been dying to be able hear this production again everyday since seeing the show early in previews. I cannot wait for the CD's release! I guess I can't really complain because at least SOME of it is being recorded (afterall, a record label may not have picked this one up), but I am truly disappointed that the CD will not be a complete recording. While I certainly believe the sources on this are reliable, I sincerely hope this changes between now and the recording session. One can always hope, right? =)

After HBO held out onto the caroline recording it supposedly owns, I would not trust them to have such a great performance such as this for fear of it being held back like the other wonderful piece it has
