Holbee, its not which one is a better stage musical, this is abot the movies. To be honest, I thought Sweeney has a huge lack of a musical arc. Everything took place within the last 10 minutes of the movie. Its hard to compare two completely different musicals, and say they are the same thing because they are not. You get two completely different feelings from each of them. I hope Sweeney doesn't win,to be honest Tim Burton just keeps repeating the same look over and over again. Sweeney looked like Sleepy Hollow, it looked like Corpse Bride, it looked like Edward Scissor Hands. While I was watching it I was kind of bored, because it LOOKED like I had watched this before because of the similarities. Its nothing that the public hasn't seen before, so thats why I don't understand why people are calling this ""A masterpiece, a work of extreme genius." because it is far far from. It looks exactly the same as many of his past works. Hairspray was a great adaptation, it worked really well on film, and they made changes where they saw fit to make it work on film. It was beautiful, there were some amazing screen pictures. I would love to see Hairspray win over something that we've seen many times before.
I think SWEENEY is the better musical. But HAIRSPRAY was the better movie.
Although SWEENEY was a fantastic movie, the fakeness of the blood just kind of ruined it for me...

Okay, so I'm returning to this late, but in my defence, if Helena Bonham Carter was auditioning for a high school musical, she'd be lucky to get the in the chorus. Same for Amanda Bynes, but Bynes would have a better chance based upon singing ability. Broadway Blog: Broadway Mouth Blog Tabe of Contents (2007)
Yep. Let me tell you...Helena's acting is on such a High School level. Yep! So many high hchools have Oscar nominated actresses! There aren't many high schooler's who could handle Sweeney's score anyway.
Sweeney Todd was possibly the greatest film musical I've ever seen. Really. (Yes, it beats Cabaret.) It worked 100%. Hairspray was a campy piece of s...wait, the new "no potty talk" rule...garbage. I'm in the minority there. Sorry. Travolta was terrible. Zac Effron looked plastic. The Tracy girl needed to take some vallium and Amanda Bynes, was well, Amanda Bynes. It felt boxy and stagey as well.

Hah, seriously. Outside opinions are all well and good, but you'll have to decide for yourself because everyone here has a different personal preference. Of course, now that I'm here, I'll stick my oar in and say "Sweeney."
I'm pretty sure Knocked Up will win anyway, so this is pretty moot. Ick.
If it did come down to Sweeney or Hairspray, I'd be pleased to see either win.
As for Helena Bonham Carter, I'm quoting Smaxie: "Just. Let. The Singing. Go." I found Depp's singing marginally better at best and I couldn't have loved either performance more than I already do.
Seriously, Actr. Across the Universe and not Once, which was clearly one of the year's best? Once didn't even get a frickin' Song nomination. Whatever.
I was referencing singing ability. That's what I meant when I wrote "based upon singing ability." :)
Face it, in a musical on stage, if you can't sing, you can't act. I would say Carter's first two songs were not well acted because her voice was physically incapable of communicating the nuances of the songs. Broadway Blog: In Celebration of Wicked
In my opinion, it's absurd to lump all musicals together with comedies. To me, comparisons with Sweeney are better suited to non-musical dramas than a true musical comedy like Hairspray. Having said all that, if I had a vote it would go to Sweeney. Although I loved Hairspray and will view its DVD more than I ever will watch the Sweeney DVD, Sweeney was a much more ambitious effort.

Why do they let Elaine Stritch keep singing, then? Whether you can sing and whether you can act are neither mutually exclusive nor separate, whether on stage or film.
^ Exactly. Has that poster never heard of Elaine Stritch, Gwen Verdon, Chita Rivera, Carol Channing etc. Those are/were DAMN good actresses who could sell a song. But they didn't/don't have the BEST voices. Updated On: 1/3/08 at 04:51 PM
