I liked both and I can't decide which one I would want to take the Globe. I'd love to see Hairspray take it just because it's kind of the 'underdog' to win. Todd has the drama going for it, but very rarely does a great, fun movie ever get the award. Thoughts?
I liked them both, but I would say Sweeney Todd was better. There were some things in Hairspray I didn't like (John Travolta's make up and voice) , but with Sweeney I was happy with everything really.
Johnny Depp is the only "huge movie star" in Sweeney Todd.
I want Sweeney to take it.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
Is this a serious question? Sweeney is a superior film in every single way. And Hairspray getting a SAG nod for Best Ensemble is ridiculous. I enjoyed the film for what it was, but one of the five best acted films of the year? Please.

The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.
I did enjoy "Hairpsray", though there were some changes / decisions I didn't really care for... but "Sweeney" deserves to win. A much better movie overall.
"Your lyrics lack subtlety! You can't just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!"
. but at least they could all sing. Heck, Amanda Bynes sounded better than Helena Bonham Carter.
- Yep! Because Penny's songs (she didn't even have any of her own) require the same ability to sing such tricky Sondheim rhythm and lyrics...righhttt. Updated On: 12/31/07 at 02:38 PM
"Heck, Amanda Bynes sounded better than Helena Bonham Carter."
I definitely disagree with that. In my opinion, the idea of Amanda Bynes playing Penny is better than Helena playing Nellie, but in reality I'd say the opposite. Helena's voice suited her interpretation of the character, while Amanda's did not. To tell you the truth (and I know know one will agree) I felt Amanda's interpretation was more flat than Helena's.

No brainer for me. Sweeney all the way. Better acting and source material. And it looked amazing. Hairspray did what it needed to do, but Sweeney is "smashing." I loved Helena Bonham Carter as well.
Choosing between Hairspray and Sweeney Todd is like choosing between Rice and Kiwi. They are both food, but other than that they have nothing in common!
I am sorry. Helena cannot sing. You can argue that it was "character interpretation", but it's not. It just sucked. ljay, that's why I would argue Hairspray was better. You have MUCH harder music in Sweeney, and you don't have the talent to pull it off. That's rather unimpressive looking.
Not that any of this matters since Juno is going to win the Golden Globe anyway.
Juno is too small a movie to win the Golden Globe. This is the Hollywood Foreign Press we're talking about. The Globes love their musicals (they even included Across the Universe instead of Knocked Up!). Evita even won in its day. Juno didn't get a director nomination while Tim Burton did. If Little Miss Sunshine couldn't win over Dreamgirls, I don't think Juno can beat Sweeney. And I predict Johnny will finally win a Golden Globe.

I thought Helena did a much better job than Amanda both acting and singing wise. I think Helena has a nice, and better quality to her voice. No, not Broadway quality, but it didn't need to be. Hairspray on the other hand would've benefited from better singers though. (Brittany Snow, anyone?) Personally, Amanda's voice just didn't sound that great compared to Helena's. Not that either are amazing, but I much prefer Helena's.
