Sweet Charity!

I saw Sweet Charity last night, and ADORED it. The entire cast was superb and the staging was perfection. I know Im gushing, but I had such low expectations and I was relly impressed. I am currently writing a full review for ya'll. And Denis O'Hare, Christina, and Kyra DaCosta couldnt have been sweeter.

Oh, I so glad you enjoyed the show! I adore it as well. I went back a second time before I left New York, just to be impressed all over again. And yes, Denis O'Hare is definitely a sweetheart.

Once again, really enjoyed this production. O'Hara, LaManna, and especially Applegate were my favorites.

re: Sweet Charity!

I agree... it was such a well-done revival. And good thing the music was nothing like the Debbie Allen revival. True to the time period it was portraying. The cast was superb.

re: Sweet Charity!

Love this show as well, only thing wrong with the revival is the ending. I really think that they screwed up with the re-write, but alas you can't get away with what you used to be able to.

re: Sweet Charity!

I actually liked the rewrite. It gives Charity hope- its sad, but encouraging to know she has found a sense of self.

re: Sweet Charity!

I prefer the darker angle from the original. She is afterall a dance hall girl, how could she really win with a wholesome guy like Oscar? His walking out on her and then her left to ask what's next (same old story) is a very real ending, instead of breaking into brass band after telling oscar off. VERY fluff and pro woman. garbage! The show was excellent until the last 4 minutes

re: Sweet Charity!

See in the original i don't care of Charity because she comes off as a cheap tart who is just whinign and complaing about how she wants to get out of this terrible life. I think with making Charity sweeter, like in the revival, you are easily on her side because you see how niave and sad her life is!

Rockabye Hamlet, was Janine in or was it Joyce? If it was Joyce i would like a review about her because i want to see her so bad in it.

re: Sweet Charity!

Janine was in it.

re: Sweet Charity!

you must have seen a bad production of the show to not care for charity in the original. really sorry

re: Sweet Charity!

I think in ANY version it's hard not to care for Charity.

Her character has been pretty much the same in every version, she just transforms more in the ending of the new revival.

re: Sweet Charity!

I saw it tonight. Hated the choreography, hated Brass Band, but here and there it was very enjoyable.

re: Sweet Charity!

I saw it a few weeks ago. I thought I would like it better than I did. Maybe it was because I was not feeling that well but it did leave me wanting to dance and sing in the aisles.

re: Sweet Charity!

Has anyone noticed that despite all the negativity that surrounded the opening of this show, you're hard pressed to find a pan of it lately? Seriously, I haven't seen a negative 'Charity' review in a long time.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. re: Sweet Charity!

re: Sweet Charity!

I've never seen the original Fosse version, but I really enjoyed Cilento's choreography. What exactly wasn't good about it? It seems like people are expecting Fosse and are complaining because he's not Fosse.

re: Sweet Charity!

^ You can see Fosse's choreography and direction in the 69 Film. DEFINITELY check it out if you haven't.

I have to admit, the Fosse choreo is just WOW. "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This" in the movie is one of the most thrilling musical numbers I've ever seen in a Movie Musical. That's why I was somewhat dissapointed with how Cilento choreographed that number, because Fosse's choreo left me speechless.

re: Sweet Charity!

I understand why people like his choreography, but what I'm saying is that people need to get his choreography out of their heads for the revival. I'm jsut saying that if Cilento's choreography was the first people wouldn't mind it. They go in expecting Fosse, that's the problem/ It may also be that I'm partial to his choreography.

re: Sweet Charity!

You'll have a great time, Kate!! I enjoyed it far more than I was expecting too. I only went because of Denis but ending up enjoying myself even when he wasn't onstage. The only part I can say didn't do anything for me was 'I'm a Brass Band' - what was the deal with those costumes?! But really, all the negativity surrounding this show is undeserved. It's not without it's flaws, of course, but in my opinion the good outweigh the bad.
