Well, between RENT and COLOR PURPLE this will be a big season for closures.
I hope they get a good tenant next. Maybe SHREK? Or 9 to 5?
So happy I got tickets to see the tour in L.A. Is it any good?
i would prefer regional productions of GREY GARDENS moreso than THE COLOR PURPLE

Could The Country Girl with Morgan Freeman take the Broadway Theatre this spring? I know it's a huge theatre, but Morgan Freeman and Frances McDormand would be big draws...
That would leave time for Shrek to move into the space in November as well.

Nope, I've never been inside the Winter Garden. I saw MAMMA MIA! on tour and that was enough for me.
The timing of the MAMMA MIA! film is unfortunate. However, I do not believe it will add 10 years. If the film is a flop, perhaps it will only add 2-3 years more. I suspect the show will close within 7 years at most...unless the film is as much of a hit as CHICAGO was...
I have to say, I'm somewhat surprised about this. I figured it had another year in it or so. Although, I did just say the same thing about RENT this past December, and you see where that got us.
I'll have to see this on tour, I guess...

They couldn't cast the National Tour because not enough black actors were auditioning. What makes you think it will be any different on the regional or community theatre level?
"Fosse - Regional and community theatres are too VERY different things."
What does that have to do with anything?
I hope they revive MAME again (with Angela Lansbury..lol! she cant even memorize her line at Deuce..but I still fantasizing) ) at the Winter Garden.
Am I the only one rooting for MAME?

Fosse - Because you clearly quoted someone mentioning the regional productions that will follow, but then made a comment about community theatres. They're completely different. Unless you took "regional" to mean any place in a region outside of New York?

Well, between Color Purple, Drowsy, and Spelling Bee, this has been/ will be a big season for closures. Technically, Rent is closing next season.

My bad. When I replied I could have sworn the poster said community theaters.

This is a little wierd..considering that they just changed casts in January. Poor Zonya can't really enjoy her broadway debut in a month. That sucks! After it closes I wonder how much the tour cast is going to change. Of course this means the tour is going to go on for a good minute! Hopefully Brandi Massey goes on as Celie before the broadway cast closes.. I have got to see that!
Oh, the Broadway's goin' GREEN, folks!

It says opening on Broadway. Not AT The Broadway. The latest news on 1/17 says:
"January 17, 2008
Broadway Performances Begin in Early November
ONCE upon a time in a land not so far, far away a new musical began its journey to Broadway.
DreamWorks Theatricals and Neal Street Productions, Ltd. have announced that SHREK THE MUSICAL will play an exclusive world premiere engagement at The 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, August 14th to September 21st, prior to opening on Broadway in the Fall of 2008. Preview performances will begin in early November at a theater to be announced."
Were just assuming that probably it would be at the Broadway Theater bec. of the large sets that it will have .. based on the set designer's past history and the size of 54th Theater (that was discussed to death in another thread)
That's why we say Shrek will "probably" take the Broadway Theater though no confirmation yet.

My literal reaction when I opened up playbill.com:
"GASP!"
Jay* ~ I was responding to LimelightMike's post which implies strongly that there is information on the Shrek page that it is going to The Broadway. But there's nothing of the sort stating that yet on there. (As of 4:27pm 1/24)
Okay...
like I told you while we were at the line going in for THE LITTLE MERMAID... its hard to figure out in the message board..who's talking to who? this is a classic example..
my bad!

My apologies for the miscommunication. jordan, I'm well aware of my wording... I'm just making speculation, pure speculation ... and of course, linking all of those who haven't visited the SHREK site. Chillax, please. I triple-check my source material before posting anything on here. It'll be a while before actual confirmation, but hey, just getting 'the buzz' out early.

Seeing this kinda makes me wonder what show will close next?
Although it is unlikely to arrive there, I think Two Cities would want the Broadway as well. But I am pretty sure that Shrek will be the new tenant.

Shrek is going into the Broadway Theatre. And that is according to everyone who works there.

My guess (if we're talking Musicals) would be Legally Blonde, based on recent numbers.
I agree.
Unless they come out with a new idea.
Ooops... Reality Show Casting!
I mean.... good idea.
