Based on Desire Under the Elms's opening night feature on Playbill.com:

"Other first-nighters included... Matthew Modine (who hopes to come to Broadway next season as Atticus Finch, under the auspices of Jeffrey Richards)..."

Saw that.

I'm intrigued, but not enough to ever go near a stage version of To Kill a Mockingbird.

Well the stage play has been around for awhile. Last year in English when we read To Kill a Mockingbird we read an article about the town the story took place in, and every summer they preform the script. But I still wouldn't want to see...I hated the book.

EDIT: To fix grammar error.

I LOVED this book. One of the few books I would reread. Not sure how well it will translate to the stage, but I would consider seeing it.

It was actually already a play-

I don't know if this is the version that's being brought to Broadway, but I assume it must translate well... it's a classic that has such a deep story.

My favorite novel of all times. Perhaps my favorite movie as well. I will pay good money to check this out.

Didn't Modine do this regionally?

I mean, really? MATTHEW F*CKING MODINE? They're gonna have to find a bigger name to get me to care about this.

I saw a production of TKAM with Matthew Modine that was put on at Hartford Stage a few months back, and it was very well done, in my opinion. It really did translate well to stage. Most of the actors were regional, but they all carried their parts well. The girl who played Scout in particular was very good for such a young age, and Matthew Modine was also excellent. This production also starred the granddaughter of Horton Foote, who wrote the screenplay of the novel. I think it would be very interesting to see this show brought to Broadway.

our school just did To Kill A Mockingbird (and our director used it as her thesis for her masters) and her professor said it was the best production (real productions, local, or high school) he had ever seen!..... to be honest, it wasn't the best show interest wise, but it's a really great show if you dig deeper and look at it's meaning

i saw it a total of 9 times: i hated it at the beginning, and was completely in love with it at the end. I think it would do really well on broadway!

I recently did a summer stock production of the version of "Mockingbird" that Modine did, and while I enjoyed acting in it, and the play was generally well-received, the quality of the writing is not up to Broadway standards. I hear the British have their own theatrical adaptation of the novel and that it's much better.

I was "Dill" in a production my freshman year of college. It was the best production ever produced by our theatre department, EVER. So said the Theatre Chair Department Head, College President, Theatre Faculty, donors, and regular audience members. I don't say this to boast, I say this because the show CAN work on the stage. Brilliantly, in fact. Perhaps even more of an impact than the film? (gasp! oh no I didn't!)

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

It's an amazing piece of literature.

Why would you have to "dig" to find meaning? It's full of meaning...you couldn't hide from it if you tried.

The nickname for my son (now re: TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD on B'way 2009-10? is "Boo". Who doesn't love them some Boo Radley? (sp?)

I hated the book, but actually didn't mind the stage version of it. It's pretty good.

I think this could totally work, but at the same time it's like who cares? The movie is SO good and the book is so good, so why even mess with it?
