Dear alterego,
Pasty Kelly won for "No, No, Nanette" and was nominated two years later for "Irene."
And she would have appeared on Broadway again (I'm sure that she was always guaranteed a job as long as Harry Rigby was alive), but as she was eight hundred and seventy years old when she was in "Irene"....

how come Wilson didn't do anything after Rent? I read that when they found him to do the movie, he was in Europe and broke. Did he just not get any offers?
The original Mr. Goldstone in the second revival of GYPSY.
Wanna Be A Foster --- I don't think he won a Tony for that.
...and this IS a gloomy thread.
HEY! Let's go to the OT Board and do one for Oscar winners who never made another film again!
Okay, let's not.

Maguire did Les Mis and, following an affair with a noted director/choreographer, embarked on a concert career.
Heredia Wilson has been seen on episodes of LAW AND ORDER and done two films.
best12bars, I was trying to add some ... humor ... to an otherwise not-so-exciting thread.
Debbie Gravitte has only been in one original show after winning in Jerome Robbin's Broadway and that lasted less then one month. She did come back as Mamma in Chicago but she was out the night when I went to see it so it does not count... right?
Jason Alexander after winning for Jerome Robbin's Broadway.
Marin Mazzie... oh wait she has not won yet. Stupid Tony's
I didn't start the thread to depress anyone, just to put a perspective on the winning of the Award and what it can do or not do for a Theatre career.
Those Dead people couldn't really use their winning as a career move, could they?
Remember, folks, some people had GOOD reasons for not coming back to Broadway:
Jason Alexander joined "Seinfeld".
Harriet Harris joined "Desperate Housewives".
George Rose was murdered while vacationing in Africa. No, I'm not kidding.
sondheimboy2 - I stand corrected. I should have known that.
CPD, I don't think This thread is Depressing, if that Makes you feel any Better.
Just to speak up for Francis Ruffelle (whom I LOVE), she has done stuff in the West End and that was where she did 'Chicago' not on Broadway. However, I'm sure that if she wanted to work back on Broadway she EASILY could.
How about the woman who won the Featured Actress in a Musical Tony in 1996 (over Idina Menzel) for Bring in da Funk or however it is spelled?
Ann Duquesnay (the woman I believe you are referring to) is in HOT FEET right now (obviously, not for much longer...)
and Savion won for Choreography
I'd like to see him smoke that job again
and bring his "Hot Feet" back to B'way!
Of course she's worked on Broadway since her Tony win for "Baby," but there's a fun/depressing story about Liz Callaway. She ended up getting a job in a card or candle shop (something along those lines) after months of unemployment and not being able to get arrested.
I'd check the records again, because I don't think that she won.
Ah, guess it truly is a story then, huh.
Rentaholic, Westchester is not in Europe...
The Tony winner in No, No, Nanette who never appeared again on Broadway was Helen Gallagher.
Jason Alexander did appear again after his win, in Accomplice.
Yeah, Liz Callaway has not won a Tony. Lila Kedrova won in 1984.
Dick Van Dyke never appeared again in a regular Broadway show in a regular Broadway house after winning his Tony. He did do The Music Man in that tour that briefly played at City Center and he did do those few nights in Chita's show.
Ted Ross never worked on Broadway again after The Wiz.
Not too surprisingly, Charles "Honi" Coles never did another Broadway show after My One and Only.
Walter Matthau never appeared again on Broadway after his second Tony win, only appearing onstage again for a short run of Juno and the Paycock with Jack Lemmon and Maureen Stapleton in Los Angeles.
Hiram Sherman also never came back after his second win, though he did start as Jimmy in No, No, Nanette out of town but had to drop out when he had health problems.
Just doing a partial search on a couple of categories, I came up with a few others;
Michael Jeter
Joan Hickson
David Rounds
Brian Backer
John Mahoney
Francis L. Sullivan
Lenny Baker
In some cases, people who won didn't live all that long after their win.
I would bet a lot more could be found if anyone wanted to do a complete search of every category.

i know dee dee bridgewater who won as Glinda in The Wiz (what the hell for i don kno) has never been on a theatre stage again. She's a jazz star now. with a crazy loyal fan following in europe and new york.
TonyaFanatic --- The divine Miss Dee Dee B. was in the 1940s Radio Hour after The Wiz.
Who knew she had time to sneak in a second Broadway show along with the devoted following she was gaining in Europe!?
But she did.
insert jimmy choo in mouth.
And I've decided NOT to feel sorry or depressed for anyone who's won a Tony Award, even if they never graced the boards again.
At least they got there, and basked in the glory of that crazy recognition once, right?
Honestly... I used to have long conversations with one of the people mentioned in this thread. He had no regrets. It was an amazing and "other worldly" experience to him, as you can imagine. (I actually tried hard to imagine it, believe me! Oh, how I tried!)
It's more from the audience's perspective, and for selfish reasons of not having that celebrated talent filter back into the "pool" that I get disappointed about it.
Some died, some gave up the biz and went on to other things...
But Old Man River, he just keeps rollin' along.
This is why I don't really aspire to win a Tony. I'd be happy just to be a working actor for the rest of my life. What's that lyric from FOLLIES? "The less ambition, the less defeat"?
