What about Anika Noni Rose for Caroline, or Change, Cady Huffman for The Producers and David Rounds for Morning's at Seven
I think it's a little silly to count people like Karriet Harris, Anika Noni Rose, etc., who just won within the past few years.
This doesn't really count, but Joan Allen won the Tony for Burn This, did The Heidi Chronicles, and then (for some reason) opted to never do theatre again. A shame.
Didn't bebe do some off broadway play in the past 5 years
Marissa Jaret Winokur HAS returned to Broadway -- just not in a different show.
Patricia Neway, who won her tony for playing 'The Mother Abbess' in "The Sound of Music" apparently never appeared in another show. She sang "Climb Every Mountain" the best on any recording I've ever listened to.
I'd say to nice jewishboy that the fact that Debbie Gravitte hasn't done more on Broadway is a testament to how sorry the Broadway musical is, than on anything on her part.
And as for Liz Callaway, I remember hearing a story about Rodger Rees going to the unemployment office the day after "Nicholas Nickleby" closed...
Patricia Neway played Lady Thiang in the 1965 Music Theatre of Lincoln Center production of The King and I, which really was a Broadway production even if ibdb doesn't think so. She had always been primarily an opera singer and I think her opera career continued, and (although a soprano) she did also continue to play those mezzo/contralto R&H mother-figure roles around the country from time to time.
She played Nettie Fowler in the TV Carousel with Robert Goulet later in the '60s.
"I remember hearing a story about Rodger Rees going to the unemployment office the day after "Nicholas Nickleby" closed..."
Nothing unusual about that. The closing of a show is considered a layoff situation for the employees and they are fully eligible to collect unemployment compensation.
Hell, the MOVIE STARS used to do it back in the '40s and '50s.
Most people don't know this, but every single actor and actress in Hollywood was officially "laid off" for two weeks out of every year. Their accountants would all demand that they sign up for unemployment benefits for those two weeks.
Some of the divas refused, but it wasn't uncommon to see the likes of Gig Young, Alexis Smith, Jane Wyman and others (incognito) in line to register. At a "low profile" office, of course.
No joke.
Yeah, crossover is nothing new. In the '40s, '50s, and '60s a lot of people who appeared on Broadway at one time or another had careers at the Met or City Opera. Some of them had big careers, others had smaller ones. Some played major roles at the Met, others just played smaller roles. People like Brian Sullivan, Polyna Stoska, William Olvis, Irra Petinna, Brenda Lewis, and others.
And big stars, as well as smaller names, often did musicals in stock. Jerome Hines had a huge Met career, and he also toured in stock in Man of La Mancha and South Pacific. Patrice Munsel did lots of musicals in stock. Lots of other examples.
The original cast of The Sound of Music had Tatiana Troyanos, later a big international opera star, and Patricia Brooks, later a leading City Opera soprano, in the nuns chorus.
James McCracken, later a big opera star, appeared in a couple of Broadway choruses and small roles in the early '50s.

Daisy Eagan
I think it was Donna McKechnie who said--- "Win a Tony and you're guaranteed unemployment for the next two years"
gavrochegirl, Daisy Eagan was featured in The Dead in 2000.
Yeah, and she grew up to be quite a hottie.
I just noticed that recent Best featured Actress in a Musical winners have not returned. Cady Huffman, Harriet Harris, Jane Krakowski, and Anika Noni Rose. And I think it is too early to judge Sara Ramirez and Beth Leavel
BwayBaby18 - Bebe did Here Lies Jenny off-Broadway in 2004.
Yeah, it's been fifteen whole minutes since their last Broadway gig.
Where the hell ARE they???
Come on, people, how often do you think Broadway shows come along for performers? Even big stars, let alone little old working actors?
"I just noticed that recent Best featured Actress in a Musical winners have not returned. Cady Huffman, Harriet Harris, Jane Krakowski, and Anika Noni Rose. And I think it is too early to judge Sara Ramirez and Beth Leavel"
Did the same person really post those two sentences?
I was thinking the same thing, Rath.
OK Again
The Original Thread
was not about Performers who have won recently
Many People use their Win to go into TV or Movies and More Power to them, but the TONY is for Stage work and I was just wondering who used it to continue their Stage Career.
All the Opera stuff is very interesting and it shows that Singers are very recognised when TONY's are handed out.
It's also interesting that Some Dancers who won like Helen Gallagher went on to TV careers
and Donna McKechnie went on to Other acting and sining roles.

The big, fat girl in THE TAP DANCE KID. Won a Tony, never did Broadway again.
Winthrop Paroo
River City, Iowa
Heather Headley was Lorrell in the "Dreamgirls" Actors' Fund concert. The audience loved her, haha.
The only Tony winners for The Tap Dance Kid were Hinton Battle and Danny Daniels. Neither of whom could be described as "a big, fat girl."
