It's definitely going to get SOME nominations, even if they're technical.
Perhaps one for Merle Dandridge whom we've been hearing a lot about?
I'm with Hook though in thinking this is going to be a very sweet awards season for "Jersey Boys."

That's really sad.
The show is very good - very enjoyable. But it is very hypocritical of them to deny certain shows - like ASU - because they want to get rid of jukebox musicals.
Then they go and honor Jersey Boys? So next season we will get some more biographical jukkies.
No, not for Merle Dandridge. She was excellent in RENT. She is not great in TARZAN. In fact, I laughed at moments of her performance. She does her best, but the material is just sub par.
Bwaysinger: Remember AIDA? Yes, I do. AIDA was an original, mostly good pop score.
TARZAN is comprised mostly of songs from the film. Most of those songs are great - but they are butchered in the stage production and they are not eligible for the best score award.
The best score nomination for TARZAN (if it did garner one, which it won't), would only consider the new material written for the show - which is abyssmal.
Elton John could atleast boast some fun, uptempo songs in addition to some really catchy ballads.
Phil Collins can do no such thing. His original material here is abyssmal.
TARZAN will get design award nods (except for costumes).

I suppose using green was a tough choice.
They could have used brown.
Or another shade of green.

CapnHook, you didn't even see TARZAN, how can you speculate?
The set design is laughable and lacks creativity in every area possible. To recognize this show in any way would be a total shame for all of the other nominated shows.
Really? I only remember reading about how the set design was nothing but stunning. And green, yes. Hmmmmm.
For me, it looked like a high school gymnasium decorated like a jungle as the theme for the junior prom. It was that tacky.
As far as Tarzan goes, Chester Gregory II definitely deserves a nod for featured actor in a musical; that said, I think the award itself will go to either Daniel Reichard or Christian Hoff.
I'd say Jim Dale is a shoo-in for Featured Actor. He's the thing about Threepenny that the critics liked best. Also, Michael Ball might have a shot if enough people saw him (when the show was running and when he wasn't sick).
Why do people think the reviews have any thing to do with these awards?
Remember Brantley's rave for SIDESHOW?
TONY nominators and voters are a wierd group.
"For me, it looked like a high school gymnasium decorated like a jungle as the theme for the junior prom. It was that tacky."
This is so true. Honestly, all the Tarzan set is is a large green sheet with holes cut in it, and several bungee cords that look nothing like vines. Tarzan should get absolutely NO nominations. If it does, I will be very mad. The only acceptable nomination would be Merle, but it's not gonna happen cause that category is STUFFED!
Side Show got a lot of nominations for a show that was already closed: Musical, Book, Score, Actress/Actress.
I still hope that there is no fifth Musical nominee (havent seen Tarzan, so shouldnt judge it yet.) If Wedding Singer, Lestat or Woman in White get noms for Musical I'll be very surprised. Perhaps for Friedman, Ball, score for WIW and Spanger OR Finley (not both.) If Lestat gets any nominations...well that would be sad.
I'd rather empty nominations than nominations going to those who dont deserve it.

Do you mean only up to 4?
Or sometimes 3?
P.S. You can bet **** will be flipped if 3PO doesn't get a nom. I know Sweeney will win. But, still. SH*T. Flipped. Will. Be.

does eden espinosa have a chance @ recreated role?
Does Simon Russell Beale have a chance? He was delightful in Spamalot.

I don't believe Beale did a full 6 months, so he's not eligible.

I can only speak for the shows I have seen this season, which I haven't seen many, I am not going to nominate shows that I have not seen so there will be some blank spots in my categories:
Best Musical
The Drowsy Chaperone
The Color Purple
The Woman in White (I honestly do think this might get a nomination despite what critics thought)
Jersey Boys
Best Play
The History Boys*
Rabbit Hole
Best RevivalSweeney Todd*(Mainly because of Doyle's direction, if it werent for that, I do not think it would have been my pick)
I have not seen The Pajama Game or Barefoot in the Park
Best Actress in a Musical
Patti LuPone
LaChanze*
Maria Friedman (I absolutely do not think she will win, but I think she will get nominated)
Best Actor in a Musical
Hugh Panaro (Lestat was pretty bad when I saw it in previews, but he was worthy)
Michael Cerveris*(Oh, Michael)
John Lloyd Young
Alan Cumming (I would really really love for him to win, but I don't think it will happen...just don't)
I would like Woman in White to walk away with some stuff because I really enjoyed it.

Did I get my numbers wrong again?
What I meant to say is they shouldnt fill out the nominations. It was sad, but remember 1985? There was NO best actor/actress nominations. I truly hope they are thoughtful before nominating someone/something just because they fill the bill.
...and remember a few years ago when there were 6 noms for best actress in a play...why? (tho I was very glad to see Jean Smart get a nom.)
"TARZAN is comprised mostly of songs from the film. Most of those songs are great - but they are butchered in the stage production and they are not eligible for the best score award."
TARZAN's score contains 5 songs from the film and 9 new songs written just for the show. If the score was comprised "mostly" of songs from the film, it would be ineligible for a Best Original Score nomination.
beacon, as much as I love Patrick Wilson as a performer, this role, and moreso this production, just didn't give him anything to work with. I don't think BAREFOOT has a shot at any nominations.

No, I don't believe ASU was better than the shows nominated last year.
Actually, I was referring to the fact that the show was overlooked. I remember some news article talking about it.
I mean, ASU's set design was award-worthy. Even so, it isn't a secret ASU was overlooked in every award's ceremony. It's no secret that critics go out of their way to put down jukebox musicals to stop them from happening.
Besides, Jersey Boys was fun - but like Spelling Bee - it is totally overrated. The book was a mess.
The only two things about Jersey Boys that makes it worthwhile are the music (but that goes without saying) and the staging - Des McAnuff does some great work. The cast is also great, the show is a lot of fun...but Tony worthy?
Haven't we learned from Mama Mia that no good comes from praising Jukebox musicals?
(And, yes. I actually liked ASU a lot more than Jersey Boys.)
I also think TCP is much better than JB. Is it without problems? No. But there are plenty of people who love TCP...and also people who hate it.
And, from first hand knowledge, many people said they would not see ASU because they want to see something original. NYC is not the Elvis capital of the world. I think the show will do much better touring around the country. Maybe Las Vegas.
But Jersey Boys comes from right across the river. Most of the people in that theatre are not theatregoers. They came to see this Jersey show. ASU tried to be a Broadway musical.
"Let's create a plot and shove Elvis into it."
They did this with MAMMA MIA! and ABBA's music back in 2001 and that show is still running and sells out.
I would imagine Elvis would have a larger fanbase than ABBA. In addition, I would imagine Elvis being a larger tourist draw than ABBA. Same with Lennon.
Why, then, is MAMMA MIA still running?

Mamma Mia was the first jukebox musical, so it got more press than the others. I'm assuming that its success is mainly due to tourists- tourists usually get tickets for the "hot" shows- the shows that have gotten the most attention. Mamma Mia got much more attention that All Shook Up or Lennon, because it was the first jukebox musical of the decade.
