To all of you super-buff BWW guys out there (both of you) who also sing like Phil Collins:
"An open call for the title role of the new Broadway musical Tarzan will be held Aug. 29 at the Here Arts Center.
"We're looking for exciting new talent for the starring role in Disney's next Broadway musical, Tarzan," reads a casting notice. The musical is slated for a 2006 Broadway berth at a theatre to be announced. No casting has been set, although the musical will boast a company of 34.
The role of Tarzan is described thusly: "A thrilling pop/rock singer to play in his 20s. Caught between the world of gorillas and the world of humans, Tarzan is a human raised by a family of apes in the African jungle. We must identify with him and care about him and his emotional journey. He is charming, sexy, vulnerable, animal-like, mysterious, and has lots of humanity. He is physically lean but toned, like a swimmer; he is not a muscle man as in the traditional Tarzan type. He should have strong upper body strength and be physical, agile, fearless, and very comfortable with movement and tackling aerial work. His body must be at one with the environment."
Both non-Equity and Equity singers of all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to attend the open call, which runs 9 AM to 4 PM with sign-ins beginning at 8:30 AM.
Those auditioning should prepare 16 bars of a contemporary/pop rock song showing vocal range. Auditioners may be asked to sing without accompaniment, although sheet music should be available if needed. Bring a photo (snapshot is okay) and resume.
Those unable to attend the Aug. 29 call can send, photo and resume to Tarzan Casting, 145 West 28th Street, 12th Floor, NY, NY, 10001.
The Here Arts Center is located in Manhattan at 145 Sixth Avenue, between Spring and Broome Streets. Visit www.here.org for directions."

Why would they think of using anyone but Cheyenne.
I don't know how long All Shook Up will last, but judging from his wonderful performance--he would be absolutely perfect as Tarzan.

I've always been curious about shows that cast for roles that require some percentage of nudity. Do the actors strip down at the first audition?

I believe they wait until callbacks before requiring any disrobing, and usually it's just shirtless -- though I've heard that for shows that require full nudity they may ask actors to audition in bathing suits.

Not sure why.... but and image of Fabio keeps coming to mind. ECK!
So they would really cast an unknown in the lead I guess? That's pretty cool. Disney certainly has an animal trend going on... first lions, now apes... next?
Actual mer-people for The Little Mermaid.
Gee, I think Nathan Lane would be perfect. Or, maybe Barry Humphries (avec possums).
Ooh! Michael Cumpsty!
C'mon, we already saw his ass in Enchanted April.
GAH,
I wish I was there for this audition. I DREAM of this role. I am an ex-gymnast (and coach), with a rock/pop voice, who LOVES the movie (mostly for the gorgeous animation, but still). Oh and I idolize Bob Crowley. oh well.

Disney needs to stop. Was Tarzan even a popular-enough movie?

I certainly never saw it. And I'm a huge Disney fan.
I think they should put a hold on Tarzan and go ahead with The Little Mermaid.
But who am I?

i think they should scrap them both and just do mary poppins which has already received an insurmountable number of raves! and bring laura michelle with it, she's already aea so cameron wouldn't even have to put up a fight!
anyway, if i was a little bit thinner than i am right now i would go...

Yes, I agree.
I really don't see how it's going to work having so many "family" shows on Broadway at one time. They will all be fighting for the same audience.

OH MY GOD....CHeyenne is like the most perfect person for Tarzan...!!!!
Cheyenne needs to do something that would better showcase his talents.
cheyenne isnt the right body type. He is a little thick, this Tarzan is going to fly and everything--I think they are looking for a little bit smaller guy. I find this very interesting that this show is using new talent, its going to be very fun!

I agree...Cheyenne is too big. I don't see him in that role at all...they need to us him for Little Mermaid, anyway. I hope they get an unkown.
Tarzan had a worldwide gross somewhere around $450 million. Not quite Lion King numbers, but a big success, nonetheless.
I agree. Get Little Mermaid ready, or bring the English Hunchback of Notre Dame over. Enough with Tarzan.

Yeah, I don't think Cheyenne's voice is right for this part either. Though he sounds amazing on the All Shook Up Cast Recording. I think an unknown will work wonders for this show, just because it adds to the mysterious-ness (?) of the character. I could care less for Phil's score (uck) but I can't wait to see the sets. Oh, and I second Hunckback! That would be amazing!
