So who else went to Wal-Mart at midnight? I waited two hours for them to dig out the 2-disc DVDs - they could only find the single disc as they had a front of store display for those. Plus, I already had that from an advanced copy I got.
Anyway, hosting a DREAMGIRLS party tonight and will be sure to report my thoughts on the DVD later tonight. For anyone who sees it in the meantime, how are the features?
Yeah, I asked in advanced at Walmart and they said they were only getting the single disk (they only had the single disk of the soundtrack as well). I have to wait until I get my check tomorrow or thursday before I get to purchase it.
People actually go to these stores at midnight?
Bought it this morning from Virgin in Times Square.
Probably overpaid. Don't care. It's right across from work.
I won't be able to watch it until tomorrow, but I'm very excited.
Is it $22.99 at Virgin for the 2 disc?

For me, the purchase was worth it if only to hear Anika sing "Ain't No Party". The extended scenes are pretty sharp, though I'm mixed about "Steppin' to the Bad Side".
Oh, and I think the packaging is kinda lame. I'm not too fond of the cover art, and it has each disc on one side of the box, so no cool inserts ala two disc "Chicago".
Munk, it's $24.99 for the two-disc.
$19.99 for the single disc.
I bought this morning- and watching the making-of currently. Its wonderful.
I have a $5 cupon, so that's good.
Lucky.

I bought the 3-disc limited edition at Target for $22.99.
I'm going to get mine at Target.
I rushed to K-Mart and got a deal. They had miss marked the 2-disc set for 19.99. I was glad :) I can't wait to watch the extras! I love the movie so much!
Does the 2-disc version come with one of those cardboard cover slips?

Nope. None that I saw anywhere, at least.
Mine didn't, but it did come with a small make-up bag. haha, I don't know how much use it's going to get.
I like when the movies come with those cardboard slipcovers. They look better on my shelf.
Cheap.
What extras come with the 3 disc edition? Is that the one that was supposed to come out later in the year?
Picked it up this afternoon for $22.99 in Best Buy. Anika's "Ain't No Party" is freakin' fabulous - so glad her audition was included.
No. The one that's supposed to come out this winter is the director's cut or something. The third disc is this is probably just an audio CD only available at one store. I think it's dance remixes of some of the songs.
Thanks munk. I will go for the 2 DVDs. I was not impressed with the remixes on the 2 disc soundtrack, won't take a chance with the 3 disc DVD thing!
"The one that's supposed to come out this winter is the director's cut or something"
You mean the DVD is being released today and they are already planning another edit for the holidays. Makes me not want to a give a dime to these money grubbing studios who exploit fans. It's ridiculous with all the different versions.
I'm on an unnecessary buying freeze, seeing as we're trying to buy an apartment this fall, but I may just have to rent the extras disc from Netflix. Would love to see the making-of docu.
For Christmas 2007, an Extended Version DVD is being released. It won't be another Special Edition DVD of the theatrical version of the film, which is coming out this Tuesday May 1, 2007. It most likely will be the film with simply those extended musical numbers added back to the film. Nothing more; nothing less. Bill did state that this Extended Version DVD will include the "Effie, Sing My Song" sequence, replacing the current spoken-dialogue version seen in the theatrical version of the film. This "Effie, Sing My Song" sequence is included on the May 1, 2007 DVD on the bonus material/special features section.
Since Bill Condon didn't have time to record an audio commentary for this May 1, 2007 DVD release, it is expected he will be doing one for the Christmas 2007 release of the Extended Version DVD, which will not be containing any of the extras this May 1, 2007 DVD release will have.
Per Bill Condon himself, EVERY version of the film -- either the current theatrical version AND the extended version (coming to DVD, Christmas 2007) are his 'director's cuts'. Each version is his vision of the film, just one being longer --- that's all. That's why neither is being billed as 'Director's Cut' because both versions ARE 'director's cuts'.
OMG! The extended musical numbers are amazing SO MUCH was cut! STEPPIN' TO THE BAD SIDE and ONE NIGHT ONLY (DISCO) are more electrifying in their original uncut versions!
