Dre2387 - I think you're reading too much into it & thus being unnecessarily hard on yourself. The only things you need to know about Hitchcock to get some of the jokes are some of the titles of his films & the fact that he always put himself in his films. Otherwise, it's more a parody of the genre than a Hitchcock parody. But, if it didn;t work for you on any level, then it just didn't.

Not to get pedantic about it, but a farce, to be a farce, must be played totally straight. The predicament of the characters is serious TO THEM and they must act accordingly or it will not be funny. Boeing Boeing, e.g.

The 39 Steps is the opposite of that. The actors are constantly nudging the sudience and playing for laughs by underlining and highlighting the basic silliness of the situation and, by extension, of the genre. Which is why, to me, it is not funny.

not only some. but almost all of them. i got rear window and north by northwest and birds and vertigo and psycho and dial m for murder, but there were loads more and i know that he put himself in every movie. It was just not as funny as people had made it seem.

You must remember all the same that at the crux of every game is knowing when it's time to leave the table... And it's important to be artful in your exit. No turning back, you must accept the con is done... It was a ball, it was a blast. And it's a shame it couldn't last. But every chapter has to end, you must agree.

There's a special kind of people known as show people. We live in a world full of dreams. Sometimes we're not too certain what's false and what's real. But we're seldom in doubt about what we feel.

i just meant that you said you felt you didn't know enough to get the jokes. i'm getting that you did know enough of the allusions & just didn't enjoy the show. nothing wrong w/ that! re: The 39 Steps - Wow

I really wish I could see it. Is it an open-ended run now?

Eastwickian, do you know the kinds of things I like? Is 'Brief Encounter' actually worth seeing? I mean, I've heard all kinds of great things about it, but I am pretty poor at the moment, so I'm running backwards and forwards between two minds about it at the moment.

I did like '39 Steps' and thought it extraordinarily well done, but I laughed more at the similar - but much sillier and less well put-together - 'Hound Of The Baskervilles' at the Duchess. ^_^

Actually, I've seen '39 Steps' twice now, both times at the beginning of October. I might have to turn it into a yearly ritual. XD

Saw it last night, and thought the staging and the set changes were brilliant. The acting was top notch, but something was missing.... (and I love Hitchcock)

Agree with a few of the others. I just didnt find it to be that funny. And as weird as it might sound for a show that didnt even run two hours, including the intermission, it seemed too long !

Bump--

Sat through the first act of this last night, all 50 minutes of it. I've seldom been so bored and annoyed by a play in my life. Way too cutesie and self-congratulatory. "Look at us, we're putting on a SHOW! See us changing characters and hats! Aren't we terribly clever!"

Ho bloody hum. I split at the intermission.
