Thought the Tonys were pretty memorable this year... the only complaint I have is the Lifetime Achievement Award... while the speech read by Mandy was really something, why wasn't there anything more than the SITPWG performance that would have happened regardless? I guess I was just a little thrown, especially considering the tribute they gave Hal Prince just a few years ago. Am I the only one who felt this way? Guess I was just expecting something kind of grand...
The choice to display ACA (no matter how much I love it!), TLM, TLK, RENT and whatever else over displaying major awards like Best Book and Best Revival of a Play was absurd and disgusting.
Loved to see Laura, Patti and Boyd win their well-deserved awards. Congrats to that fabulous trio!
"I know now that theatre saved my life." - Susan Stroman
Very glad Mark Rylance won! I would have liked Daniel Evans to win as well but I knew that award would be Paolo's. There really weren't any major upsets this year, were there? Unlike last year. Congrats to all the winners!
"Look Mr. Sondheim I made a hat where there never was a hat, and a latin hat at that!"
Best Featured Actress in a Musical goes to Laura Benanti!
"YAAAAAAAAAYARTHUR!"
Congratulations, you wonderful woman you.
Best Leading Actor in a Play goes to Mark Rylance!
Aww. That's too bad for Patrick.
Rylance continues his streak of Speeches About Nothing. Good for him!
Best Featured Actor in a Play goes to Jim Norton!
Raul is still the man. He'll get his shot one day.
Other Points
*Stew! Stew was the MAN!
*A grave imbalance has occurred. SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE was completely completely forgotten. Shame on you, Tony Voters.

the worst part not letting idina and kristen sing for good together. it would have brought tears down my cheek, i was thinking about the 2004, or 2005 tonys when they performed it will always be in my book of one of the best tony performances. they def need a wicked performance of the broadway elphies and glindas for next year, and i bet billy elliot will perform electricity.
south pacific and in the heights have great scenic design, i agree best costumes to south pacific. i thought lighting would have gone to in the heights.
the worst part not letting idina and kristen sing for good together.
...the hell? Why would they have had those two sing a song from WICKED? The only show that performed with it's original cast members (that wasn't from this season) was RENT, and that was only done as a tribute because it is closing.

Completely agreed. I thought this was in poor taste.

Also completely agreed. Congrats to this incredible triplet!
I'm really HAPPY for ALL The Musical Awards, except Best Book, which should have been Xanadu's ! PATTI WON...all is well in the world ! Updated On: 6/16/08 at 02:23 AM

Best Acceptance Speech (Male): Lin-Manuel Miranda Best Acceptance Speech (Female): Patti LuPone Best Awkward Clapping: Patti LuPone The "Whoopi Roots Through Your Garbage" Award: Mary-Louise Parker Most Likely to Get a Call from the Anti-Irish Defamation League: Whoopi Goldberg The "White People Live In It" Set Design Award: August: Osage County
I thought the show went well. Whoopi kept things moving nicely and the winners were pretty much as I had anticipated. I would like to have seen Tom Wopat win for Best Actor and I think Rob Ashford was seriously shafted - yet again. But I send a big atta-boy to DHP for his call out to Ashford after forgetting to thank him in his acceptance speech last year. Kudos for being thoughtful enough to remember those who helped you along the way.
As always, I enjoyed the commentary of my fellow BWW posters. I broke my hand and fingers up at work, so I couldn't join in the fun, no way could I keep up with you guys and your quick responses. But you kept me smiling and entertained, and I even learned some things I didn't know. So all-n-all, a wonderful night.
I thought that something was missing from the Tonys. Is there not usually a segment where the Tonys remembers those members of the Broadway community who passed away? An "In Memoriam"? I know the Oscars and Emmys do it. I always assumed the Tonys did it as well. ??? from RC in Austin, Texas
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
They did it for the audience in attendance during one of the commerical breaks, RC.

I am just getting around to posting. I enjoyed the show. I was not thrilled with Lin-Manuel's rap acceptance speech and was disappointed that Sondheim was not there. I an sure I can sift through threads to find out why.
The thing that bugged me the most was how unenthusiastic the presenters were. For goodness sake, they are ACTORS. At least pretend you want to be there.
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I?
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Petty good telecast. I did not miss Best Book or Best Rvival of a play at all. I liked most of the performances. I would say the three best were(in no particular order):Gypsy, In the Heights, and Sunday in the Park with George.
I would just like to say that I have officially fallen in love with Daniel Evans and Jenna Russell! Daniel was singing along to "Xanadu" and "Seasons of Love"! Ha! And did you guys see the way he grabbed JEnna Russell after their performance? Marvelous! Jenna and firce British singing makes me smile! Did anyone notice a little LuPone in "Let others make that decision"? Jenna definitely slid up to the note! Way to go!
