The Breakfast Club- On Stage!
The Breakfast Club- On Stage!#1

So, I did some google detective work, and I've come across TONS of theaters putting on productions of The Breakfast Club.
Now as I've come to understand, there is not stage adaptation where you can obtain the performance rights. SO that brings me to my question: Are these people performing their own adaptations illegally? I mean, most of these plays are going on in the middle of the country, where I'm sure they won't get caught, but there were a few that were in LA. How is this possible?
What are the consequences of this? IS there anything anyone can do if someone tries to mount a production of it in a small blackbox in NYC?

This has already been discussed in full on this board:

THanks but that thread didnt talk about any of the issues I asked about...
I asked about rights and consequences, not if it has been done. As I already mentioned, i KNOW its been done. I was asking about the more legal aspects of doing that.
Thank you anyway.

Yes, it's illegal.

Posted: 3/2/09 at 7:20amIs it always illegal to copy a script for a movie and use it on stage?

Yes it is illegal.
Yes, everyone does it.
Everyone breaks the law.
Eventually, someone will get caught.

I have to say we are one of the company's who did the show illegal last October, it was a huge hit for us and played very well.
The funny thing is that if you watch one of the features on the new dvd release one of the film actors mentions how great it is to see people performing it as a stage play lol

Wow. Glad to know you're proud of putting on an ILLEGAL play. Wonder how the writers and producers of the original material feel about this?
You're such a piece of work, Mr. Flashdance.

The Mr Flashdance thing is s old, move on
And i didn't say i was proud i just said we did it, we made a decision and decided that if they were talking about it been performed as a stage play on an official dvd release and they were happy to turn a blind eye to the american productions, then we figured a UK one would be fine.

I'm not saying anyone in this thread is like this, but I typically find that the people who get the most up in arms about "illegal" things having to do with theater are the ones who can barely move around in their homes due to the massive amounts of bootlegs they own.
Just an observation. But as for this particular issue I do believe the rights holders are not too concerned with these productions being done. It's become such an iconic piece I'm actually surprised they haven't developed something themselves for the stage, play or musical.

Posted: 3/2/09 at 8:43pmI've tried. They're still waiting for recordable Blu-Ray before making the switch from Beta.

I agree that the those involved in creating the film have turned a blind eye to productions. I mean I just googled the words "breakfast club stage play' and came across quite a lot of productions, a couple in LA.
But dont you think NYC is a different story? Even if its in a small blackbox far far from 42nd street? Haha.
The reason I ask is that I want to produce a semi-staged reading of it downtown, but dont really know how to go about it, if its even possible without getting into some heavy legal issues...etc. Understand?
