"The Debut" musical film thread

Reviews are out for the new film "The Debut" which tells the story of Mona Friedman, a shy new jersey housewife who auditions for a role at the Brooks Arts Center in the fictional musical "Nosy Neighbors". Her life begins to unravel as her director Jerry pushes her to find her character and in turn find herself.

Bernadette Peters plays Serena Cherry, a veteran theatre actress who drops out of "Nosy Neighbors". Peters sings in the film.

Deadline confirmed Danny Burstein appears as do many Broadway veterans including Bonnie Milligan, Craig Bierko, Colton Ryan, Lilli Cooper, and K. Todd Freeman. https://deadline.com/2026/09/the-debut-review-julianne-moore-paul-giamatti-jesse-eisenberg-1237069095/

Eisenberg wrote seven original songs, of which “The City May Have Chewed Me Up (But It Can’t Spit Me Out)” sung by Julianne Moore and Bernadette Peters will be the primary push for Oscars Best Original Song category. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/the-debut-jesse-eisenberg-original-songs-oscar-push-1236687820/

"The Debut" musical film thread

Will Mavity of Next Best Picture described the movie as "Whiplash”/“Black Swan” merged with Comedy Central’s “Review with Forrest MacNeil” and set in the world of community theatre", and that's total catnip for me.

That variety review was a love letter to the film.
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

Re:

Playbills were given to those who attended the first screening of the film tonight at the Toronto Film Festival. The musical Jesse Eisenberg created for the film is "Nosy Neighbors".
