In the second act, after the King proposes to Mrs. Anna, she tries to stall him by insisting they be married by a real Anglican Priest, so the King sends for one. By the time the Priest gets there from England, the King is dying and he performs a very moving bedside ceremony. At the end of the show, all the King's previous wives petition his will and leave Anna penniless and alone in a foreign country.

Posted: 4/3/07 at 8:30amSorry, Whatever, I'm not cutting the "kid" some slack. He needs to take responsibility for his own work, and that includes researching the GD show. Too many kids are cut way too much slack these days. He should research the show himself if he wants the extra credit for his assignment.

I did the King and I last year, lots of fun. Great show.
Don't see why they're asking you about the priests, they're not important at all. They just sing boring chants and walk on and off the stage in processions.
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say

our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.

^ Exactly.
When I did my American History paper on Our Town in my junior year, I did all my research - with the only exception of asking my director (who had done the show the previous year) for some input. But I only did that BECAUSE he had directed the show, loved the play, and had a lot of good insight.
And another question that plagues me as I read this kid's message is - How can one fully appreciate something if they haven't seen it? Granted, there are some musicals I've heard the score of and liked very much without ever seeing an actual production. But to automatically say "I don't plan to see this show, I just need the extra credit" is saddening. Do yourself a favor, ucjrdude902, go and rent the movie. That's the very least you can do. And if, by chance, you are able to see the show live - do it.

Posted: 4/3/07 at 8:55amOK, here's the plot: Anna is a pin-up girl who has been in many magazines. The 'king' is actually a king of retail, and one of the wealthiest men alive. After the king's death, Anna struggles with his family for his estate, then suffers her own tragic demise.

Don't let the previous posters fool you. They are just mean people who want to make you watch the King and I simply becuase you could easily get your hands on the film version and find out what the show is about.
The truth is that the priests are first discovered lounging half-naked smoking opium (a very common ritual then) in those long thai pipes. they are simply there as background in a scene where Lun-tha, having just been romanced by the Kralahome, sings "My Lord and Master". Pretty simple work really.
The only other time you see much of the priests is when they are dancing with mrs. Anna in the 'Getting to Know You" number. In this scene, the priests wear hoop skirts and do intricate hand gestures as they try to act and move just like Mrs. Anna in order to better understand her.
They also appear randomly chanting "Home Sweet Home" in the first act and during the arrest and trial of the prostitute Tuptim when her lover, Lady Thiang prays for Tuptim's release.
Hope this was helpful and you get the extra credit. See? No hard work is required!

I can't tell you the details, but they are so VITALLY important, that they were cut from the last production I did.
No one missed them.

Thanks for all the Priest bashing, everyone!
I was a Priest in this, lol. They're also in the Act 1 Finale, atleast in the production I was in.

- Yep, very true. I doubled as a prop man in the ballet. I honestly didn't care what part I played in the show, I was just happy to be in such an amazing musical.
