re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

Again another director from the play genre to win an Oliver

Thought Terry Johnson might win this one,for La Cage or Emma Rice for Brief Encounter.

"Pleased for Elena but her Evita was better than her Piaf."

Agreed. Right award for the right actress, but the wrong show!

Great news for La Hodge, though. I loved his performance (and everything else about that production, in fact) so much.

EDIT: not so happy about Jersey Boys, though. Excellent performances, but the show itself did nothing much for me, unlike Zorro, which while not a classic was great fun.

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

Was Black Watch better than August?

Having seen both, I'd say yes. As far as it's possible to compare two such very different works. Black Watch was a triumph of theatre, encompassing acting, movement, sound, and delivering an absolutely devastating truth to stunned audiences. August: Osage County was frickin' awesome, and also did its part to deliver devastating truths, but while it would probably deservedly come top any other year, it's impossible for anything to compete with the near-perfection delivered by Black Watch. :3

August: Osage County came from America, did well at the Tonys, didn't do so well at the Oliviers. Sunday in the Park with George (revival) came from the UK, did well at the Oliviers, didn't do so well at the Tonys. These things balance out. Plus I'm sure they must've taken into consideration that August: Osage County didn't originate in the UK and was transported in its entirety from the US; it was frickin' awesome, but hardly a triumph of British theatre. So while it was frickin' awesome, I'm not exactly hugely sad it's not getting anywhere tonight.

I don't know whether August was snubbed...i think it was more a case of Black Watch was clearly a strong favourite on the comittee...either that or the Olivier Comittee got together with the Cast and Production of Balck Watch and had a big theatre fueled orgy.

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

Are they trying to make a point here?

Yes, Scrippsy. The point is: Black Watch was the finest single theatrical production in the UK for the entirety of 2008.

I'm sad that Jersey Boys beat Zorro, for much the same reasons I'm glad Black Watch beat August: Osage County, but despite the weird nominations and a few stray bizarre results, I'm very pleased with how things turned out. Especially for the Histories and Black Watch. re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

All these awards and no one can actually go and see Black Watch can they? it has closed hasnt it?

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

Well, you could buy the DVD. It's not quite the same, but it is there.

I might just be incredibly naive, but I think it's quite nice to see an award-worthy production winning awards even though there's no commercial reward, rather than giving the awards willy-nilly to shows that don't deserve the awards so much as they'd like a bump at the box office. :3

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

I secretly think that the comittee is the cast of the Sunday in the Park revival and this is their way of getting back at America for the Tony awards :P

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

True, but then people who hadnt heard of it before cant actually experience it, so to a wider public the awards dont mean much because they cant get involved and go and see it.

Yeah - OK Chuckles - if I think back to my post in our review of the year I mentioned Black Watch but didn't mention August. And you make good points about Sunday and commercialism too.

And that's why I respect the Olivir Awards even though I think SoLT is asleep at the wheel.

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

Black Watch is the perfect example of what I think great theatre is: it lives in the imagination of the many, but in the memory of the few.

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

No surprise for me for Jersey Boys, I thought the stunning Marguerite deserved it, but only problem I was the only one to like it.

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

I wasn't surprised at JB. I wanted Zorro, cause it was british, but hey ho...the Americans have to be involved somehow re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

My mum found this site and was following the whole awards show, so I couldn't post..
Anyway, yay for Elena Roger =) But, out of curiosity, when did Jersey Boys become so disliked? For a good many months I didn't hear a bad word about it, then suddenly it's overrated or whatever? I genuinely think it's a good show, I love it, I loved Zorro too, but y'know, I think JB did deserve it!

Also, I hadn't heard of Black Watch before tonight, what was it like? It was in the play category but won choreography? (Hope I got that right!)

Also Weez, should of/have is one of my pet peeves re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009 sad =)

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

I NEVER said a GOOD word about Jersey Boys, but oh well, I think the big one will be next year, we have some AWSOME shows opening in the next year!

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

I think the hate started around the time when it won best Set Design at the WOS Awards Sparkles :) haha. No i think it's more a case of wanting a british musical to conquer the big, scary, Tony winning, American one. Unfortunately Goliath won this time round.

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

I don't think it's that Jersey Boys is disliked, as such, but it's an unoriginal story, with totally unoriginal songs, imported from America, whereas Zorro may not have been totally original either, but at least it was homegrown. We are nothing if not patriotic. :)

Black Watch was indeed a play that won choreography, as did War Horse last year. Choreography is more than just dancing (as I'm sure you know. :) ), which is why I will defend Spring Awakening's choreography Tony to the end. It was just really really damn well done. :3

I don't know but when Mama arrives there'll be hell to pay.

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

Yeah the set design one really was a weird one =S
But thanks for the replies, I knew I could count on you two =P Weez I want to see another thing with you, my meet up with you lot was very educational ^_^ re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

Isn't it strange how so many people slag off our country, but when it comes to shows we're patriotic? re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009 =D

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

It's the basic British sense of family; *we're* allowed to pick on our family members, but no one else is! And we may pick on our family members, but we have pride in them too. Natural British self-deprecation, I guess. :3

When's our next BWW:WE outing then? What're we off to see? re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009
