The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

This Sunday evening. As usual not in a theatre. As usual not being televised. As usual a missed opportunity to publicise one of the things this country does superlatively. But I'm still excited because despite all that they are prestigious and they usually make good decisions. To my mind no other theatre awards matter (I vote in the WoS awards to give them a bit of class but I don't take the results too seriously The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009 ). So I shall be toggling between here and

https://www.officiallondontheatre.co.uk/olivier_awards/

to see, cheer, and debunk the results. Anyone else up for an online party?

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

I'm in :)

Even in Australia our theatre awards are shown on TV. How is that in the theatre capital of the world they are not?

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

They used to be televised on BBC1 back in the 80s. Why they don't get televised now I don't know - you'd think there would at least be room for them on BBC4.

I guess it must be a combination of government and BBC ignorance and apathy towards the arts, unmotivated leadership at the SoLT and not enough money in various budgets. Mama probably knows the inside truth.

I'm seeing A Little Night Music on Sunday and then am travelling back home for cake. I may put in an appearance at the online party, but I can't guarantee it, and I may be late.

I don't know how seriously I can take the Oliviers this year; no nominations for Branagh, Slinger, or Michaels Grandage and Boyd?! What were these people *seeing* all year?! D:

I will totally forgive them if they give Black Watch best choreography though. If War Horse can beat Hairspray, then surely Black Watch can triumph over all. re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

ALNM is a good excuse not to show up. So is a birthday.

How old are you by the way re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

Have a good day.

It's a drop-in-anytime, come-as-you-are type of event anyway.

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

The Oliviers lost credibility for me when they awarded Best Musical to Hairspray over Parade.

They lost it for me when they awarded Best Musical to Forbidden Planet over Miss Saigon.

But they've regained it again. Too many good decisions since then.

And I think they were right to exclude Branagh: there were much better performances in Ivanov than his.

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

So the awards are well underway, nothing really to discuss so far. I have a feeling Weez is going to be very happy with the Histories winning best costume :P

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

It seems to be the techies to start off with. I'm having trouble accessing the SOLT blog so I'm looking at Carriesparkles' (nice of her to join in the thread rather than starting a new one).

Hooray for Lesli Margherita!!! After seeing Zorro, I was hoping she would win.

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

God of Carnage getting Best Comedy will no doubt help it on Broadway. I passed on this as I didn't like Art and would only have gone for the cast.

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

Onsage, have one the first of many awards tonight, I am sure.

LBC (radio station) have a reporter at the Oliviers, also available online and dab.

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

I am not having any problems with the website.

Patrick Stewart has just won the award for best supporting actor in Hamlet.

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

I can see the photos and the list of winners on SOLT but I can't access the blog. I'm happy with Carrie's commentary so I'm going to stick to that - she'll probably be more objective anyway.
