The Liberty Theater Is No More....

I know that some people on the board have expressed interest in the forgotten Liberty Theater, entombed beneath the excess of 42nd Street, so I thought I would share this sad news. My friend spoke to the Hilton Hotel security director yesterday because I'd told him that all I wanted for my birthday was to see inside the abandoned auditorium. The security director said that seeing inside would be no problem at all, but queried why we would want to see the restaurant construction site? He escorted my friend inside and sure enough, less than three weeks ago, the place was gutted and all the walls covered over and painted white. The home of Porter, Kern, the Gershwin's 'Oh, Kay!' and George M. Cohan's 'Little Johnny Jones' is about to be... a Tim Horton's. "Give My Regards to Broadway," indeed. Thanks for nothing, New York.

Does not look like there was that much left before they gutted it.

They could at least have shot a Follies movie in it first. Actually, the second photo in the flickr links calls to mind the opening credit/overture sequence I've had in my mind for a Follies movie since high school.

As the credits/overture do their thing the camera pans over the empty seats of the auditorium. The seats start out appearing in pristine condition but slowly, as the camera pans across many a plush velvet seat, they start to appear deteriorated to completely destroyed.

Follies could be done at the old RKO Keiths in Flushing.

Much of the lobby remains but the auditorium would really lend itself to Follies

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but I am a bit confused as to where this actually is. Can someone spell it out for me? Apparently my brain has left me...

The back of the stage is on W. 41st between Seventh and Eighth. The main entrance is still on 42nd Street, but has been severed and blocked off from the auditorium, and now serves as the entrance to Madame Tussaud's. The theater was essentially entombed by Applebee's, Dave and Buster's, Tussaud's, the AMC Empire, and the Hilton Hotel.

God, this is so sad. I can't believe that owners aren't snatching up the opportunities to buy up houses like this. I know the state of Broadway is being affected by the current economic state, but Broadway real estate is always at a prime.

So sad, it amazes me how badly New York have treated so many of their theatres compared to London.

Isn't the real tragedy here that NYC will have a Tim Horton's?

The New 42nd Street Inc. has been a real disaster for the historic theatres on 42nd Street. The Harris, which was nearly intact, was torn down with barely a headline about it. The Apollo and the Lyric were essentially demolished and the inhospitable Ford Center/Hilton/Foxwoods went up in its place and has mostly sat empty in between flops. The Times Square, also largely intact, is marooned, waiting for a tenant and because of its lack of a loading door on 43rd Street will never likely be a theatre again. The Eltinge/Empire, which serves as the entrance to AMC, received a truly poor "restoration" and is pretty much an embarrassment. The historic Selwyn building that was the entrance to the Selwyn/American Airlines "fell down" in the middle of the night, conveniently when no one was around to witness it. Now, the Liberty gets stripped to the walls. New York and 42nd Street deserved better.
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

What a shame. I had hope that this may have been left in peace at the very least. And for a Tim Horton's?! Heartbreaking.

This is tragic indeed. How many seats did the Liberty hold?

It doesn't look like a large theater. And Broadway NEEDS small houses!

Thank you. That's where I thought it was, but I was confused as the OP said they got in via the Foxwoods house manager...

Hilton Hotel... not Hilton Theater/Foxwoods/Ford Center for the... and so on and so forth.

The problem with reusing this theater was that all the 42nd Street entrances and fire exits were cut off by the other businesses that sprang up literally all around it. It no longer had existing support facilities or a fly, as I understand it, also because of everything that had been built around it. However, since the auditorium was completely intact, there had been much discussion on these and other boards about repurposing it as a kind of museum dedicated to Broadway and 42nd Street... or at least something remotely interesting. New York's complete and utter indifference to preserving its history extends far beyond just the theaters. It's really disgraceful, which is what makes a project like the High Line park so noteworthy and important.

And thank you for that, Smaxie. Very well put. The greatest street in the world deserved far better.

That is Bull! If there is a restaurant going into the space they need to have the proper exits, doors and fire exits. No reason this could not have been restored back to a functional theater. So sad!

That's absolutely devestating to hear and see. Why do we need another Tim Hortons on 42nd St? If there aren't already, there will soon be more Starbucks and the like in the theatre district than theatres.

Ah, Hilton HOTEL. No wonder I was so confused! Thanks for the clarification!

The ghosts go over to the Foxwoods and play havoc with the actors flying around.

I stand by the statement there is not much left inside. I do admit the the asbestos fire curtain looks good but that is about it.
