And I agree with what Fantabulous said -- it's hard to say stopping him on the street is a better approach than asking at the stage door, because even though the stage door is crazy, at least that's a time and a place kind of... reserved FOR those sorts of things. Of course, I understand he wasn't taking pictures at the stage door, so... re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 14 v. 2 I wouldn't go so far as to say that it's wrong across the boards to ask for anything at places other than the stage door -- I think it depends on the person, the situation, and lots of specific factors.

see, I'm the kind of person who would be debating in my head whether or not to ask him, and by the time I decided, the light would have already changed and I'd be out of luck lol

I am definitely that person. Not even about asking for pictures and stuff, but about approaching them in general. "Should I? Should I not? ... oh wait, they're gone."

i usually am shy which is why i was shocked. i think if adam was the first famous person i'd ever met i would never have asked him. the first time i met Rob Thomas i could barely even tell him my name. personality wise (from what i can tell anyway) adam and rob are very similar, maybe that's why. who knows...

Heh, but Rob Thomas is like, a legit celebrity -- in the sense that most of his fans probably don't get to meet him. I think part of what gives Broadway fans the confidence to approach performers is that so many fans HAVE met them that even before you do, you can find out what their personalities are like and how they interact with their fans.

I used to belong to the same gym as Rob Thomas. One day I was getting out of the pool and I saw him on one of the machines, I was like "hmm, he looks familiar.." I'm not even a big fan, but some of my friends in hs were huge Matchbox 20 fans, and they were so jealous.

Even that wasn't enough to make me maintain my gym routine tho, heh

actually rob and the MB20 boys are REALLY good to their fans. they do go out of their way to meet and interact with fans. Paul, the old drummer (now guitarist) for MB20 did a show at the Living Room and a bunch of us went. Rob was there and was totally cool. He came outside to smoke while a friend and I were smoking, he recognzied us and came over to us and started a conversation. Not everyone would do that.

I'm generally very shy, so I'd be more likely to walk in the other direction.

That's surprising -- most people that big don't often do the meet-and-greet thing. In general, though, for people of that level of fame, the point I was trying to make still stands. With someone more "mainstream," so to speak, it's far less likely that a lot of fans are going to have met them; there's not as much reassurance that they're going to be nice when fewer people have met them. But with someone like Adam... think about how easy it is for his fans to meet him. It's common knowledge that he's so sweet, which i think makes him more approachable to people who might be shy. Obviously not limited to him -- what I'm saying is that you can go onto a message board like this and ask, "is ___ nice?" and people will tell you what a great person they are and how many great experiences they've had. That's reassuring, because you can predict what you're going to get.

Broadway is, in a way, unlike any other form of entertainment, partly because of how easy it is to meet those you admire on Broadway. It's really interesting that the actors and actresses are so accessible that fans become really comfortable approaching them. That doesn't really happen anywhere else.

I'm generally too nervous to even meet people at the stage door. The more that I admire someone, the more nervous I get, and therefore I have the least chance of meeting them.

Right, I mean, people who are big followers of a film actors and stuff don't often have the opportunity to meet -- let alone form relationships -- with them. The idea that you can become friendly with these people is something fairly exclusive to the theater (although I'm sure it happens in the non-mainstream music scene quite a bit, too); and it's a great thing, but of course it can also fuel both competitiveness allow people to think that just because someone gets to know them, they're friends and that whole thing.

Yeah. I mean, it's futile for me to talk about that, in a way, because I HAVE forged legitimate friendships with actors through supporting their work, but I know that someone could just as easily accuse me of merely perceiving it, accuse me of being crazy and inventing it, thinking it's something it's not, etc.

i don't know if this is somewhere in the old threads (i have read some of it, not all of it, just too much) but i hate not knowing the names of people i'm talking to and where they are from. so if you don't mind, who is everyone and where are they from?

So it's a bit late, but I'd totally do what misschung said and debate whether or not to approach him for so long that I'd miss my opportunity. I'm very indecisive.

But it is true that theatre is special in the way that the performers are so much more accessible. I think part of it has to do with the fact that they're in predictable locations so much of the time, which is unlike most other medias (yes, Hollywood is a predictable location for moviestars I suppose, but they're not always working there- they travel). And you're right Emcee, I've found that it is similar in the local music scene. I'm no expert on the topic, but there is one band that I like that started near where I live, and at shows of theirs I've been to, they know many of the fans and are very approachable and friendly- hell they came up to me and asked what I thought of the show.

Heh, that debate reminds me of one of the times I saw John Doyle, and so wanted to go just... tell him how much I loved his work or something dorky like that, but by the time I really committed to even going up to him, he was too far away, and I'd have looked ridiculous trying to catch up to him. re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, part 14 v. 2 That was a bummer of a missed opportunity.

Totally not the topic of conversation, but I didn't know Matchbox 20 was still doing anything, heh.

I think even within the theatre community, you get kind of a warped idea of meeting people. I'm always perplexed by the people who squeal about how nice Actor X is for signing their playbill on autopilot and barely looking up. Yeah, it's nice they signed at all, but I'd hardly consider that brag-worthy. Then you compare it with actors who are TOO nice and fans become convinced they're "friends" because they spend half an hour at the stagedoor chatting every night.

I prefer the middle ground. Actors who are engaging (i.e. they actually look at you and react to what you're saying), but can graciously move on before fans start babbling on about their life story.
