re: The Public Sings

Cheyenne Jackson took the lead on "Black Boys" and a terrific and very handsome African American singer whom I didn't recognize (anyone out there know?) led "White Boys"

That was Destan Owens from Rent.

For some reason the entire chorus of white boys on the "Black Boys" side cracked me up, between Jesse Tyler Ferguson and David Burnham (and the other guy with curly hair whom I know I've seen at a BWW concert but can't recall his name) with Cheyenne leading them. They were the most motley crue I've seen in a while. I was especially fond of Jesse's one sleeve up, one sleeve down look. LOL

That would be the lovely and VERY talented Brynn Williams! She was in Chitty and In My Life!
What is your dream role?
My dream role would be to be myself. To be performing at the Hollywood Bowl and to have an audience there just to see me, as Stephanie. They are there because they like what I do as a singer, an artist and a person (the last being the most important). I enjoy escaping and portraying other characters, but to be accepted and wanted as yourself... that's amazing! --Stephanie J. Block Just one of the many reasons I admire and respect Stephanie!!

re: The Public Sings

I felt so bad for her when she came out without a mic. If I would have been in her position, where she was stopped, and someone had to bring a mic out for her, I would have been a mess. Props to her for being very professional about it.

re: The Public Sings

I wish I had seen Ms.Murphy skipping a high C and laughing at herself. She is quite a performer. Great review, Margo. But you must expand more on Cynthia Nixon, it was her first time singing in public so I really wonder how she did it.

re: The Public Sings

"I wish I had seen Ms.Murphy skipping a high C and laughing at herself"

I wish I could have seen it too...I mean I saw the performance, but was in the last row and certainly could not make out any facial expressions or laughter...in fact even the very familiar faces we had to work as a group to figure out who it was!

For a while we thought the Pirate King might have been Kevin Kline...

Anyway, I mean Margo said it all, amazing, amazing night. MEF, thanks for warning me, it was indeed high but fortunately being in the last row I spent most of the show sitting on my seat folded up/high or standing so I certainly saw everything. I'm so thankful to the Public Theatre for making it possible for those of us who lack loads of money to attend this event, I mean I've never seen anything from Chorus Line or Hair performed live. Kinda wish they could have done "Hair" just b/c I love that song, and was shocked they didn't end w/ "One"--too obvious maybe?

Foscas, I'm sure Margo and others could give you a better idea/review than me but she certainly seemed to have a good voice and was certainly a performer--knew how to work that song and it was very entertaining.

Oh, and indeed that was Donna Murphy singing to Jesse.

re: The Public Sings

I'm a bit confused. Was the tempo thing with Menzel a constant joke or something? That would be rather embarassing if he stopped like out of nowhere.

How did Ms. Menzel do with an Adam Guettel song? I've only heard 'Floyd Collins' and 'Light in the Piazza' and those are 2 very different styles of Adam Guettel. Just curious how she did.

re: The Public Sings

"the tempo thing" was a joke... though in the case of Ben Stiller he was SERIOUSLY having trouble keeping up with the words of the song.

I didn't think it was embarassing, as the song isn't meant to be taken seriously - though for a bit Idina was doggedly chirping out her bits of the song "sing" "ping" etc even when Ben was unable to finish his line because his tongue kept getting tangled.

It got a big laugh when she stopped to slow the song down - the whole premise was very cute.
Now what would you say if today I started over? Without a thing but this taped together four leaf clover And I'll pretend like everything is already alright And I'll run toward the sun till the castle's out of sight

re: The Public Sings

I know Nichols has a good singing voice, but for some reason I can't picture him on a stage performing. Was he good?

re: The Public Sings

He was fine. He looked scared to death and clutched on to Streep for dear life, but has a nice tone. He really looked like he just wanted it to be over ASAP.

re: The Public Sings

I hate to sound like an ass, but I thought the evening was a LOT more hit and miss than Margo. I loved the opening with A Chorus Line and Savion and Co.

I had heard Donna McKechnie do the "Joe Papp" song and hers is WAY better than Betty's, but I have a feeling Betty was a last-minute stand-in for Donna, and Cheyenne and Norm (especially) were wasted singing backup.

I have never seen Idina perform live and I must say I don't get it. I thought her pronunciation was weird and she doesn't seem to have a great deal of stage presence--I thought Zach Braff completely upstaged her and then when Norm and Rosie joined in, I forgot about her (Idina). Which brings me to Billy Porter--I hope it was just last night, but his voice is shot--he just didn't have that big upper range he used to have. I was very disappointed in him. And his song was redundant and pointless.

I love Chuck Cooper and thought he was fine on the Two Gents song, but it just isn't all that interesting--what WAS very fun was in the chorus, there was a male twirler who reminded me of a cross between Jack O'Brien and Kevin Chamberlain--he was hysterical!

And Betty was fine in the "Getting My Act..." song, but nothing special.

I was also disappointed with Daphne Rubin-Vega. Another case where I don't get it. She also seemed to have very strange posture, but it mught have been because I was so high up. Bless Natalie Portman's heart--terrible singer, but she kinda got through it and it's brief if nothing else. The White Boys/Black Boys started off fun. but it didn't seem to go anywhere and Cheyenne isn't as sexy as previously thought. Destan Owens was HOT. Meryl was easily the highlight of the Hair section, both very funny and on pitch--she sounds great! Braff and Portman were actually quite good at Initials, Braff especially so--maybe he's looking for the film of Spamalot? I thought he was most impressive and the biggest surprise of the night. The Hair medley finally ended and Lea DeLaris came out and showed why she's one of the biggest talents in the theatre--just terrific--though I wished she could've busted out a little "I Can Cook, Too," but oh well.

I agree that Donna's Pirate Jenny was top-notch--and I would also like to thank Donna for being the evening's biggest trouper and for having a COSTUME for EVERY character she played--DIVA, DIVA, DIVA!!! I love her! The ending was just great--a genuine moment, as they say.

I also enjoyed all of the "Pirates" numbers--I thought the choreo was pretty good, and Marc was adorable...he looked so YOUNG...Margo, the Policeman's song is "When the Foreman Bears His Steel" and I'm not sure of the last song either, but it was awesome! (I'm running out of adjectives here) George was also very cute as the major-General.

And then there's Elaine--she's the best. End of story. Best ovation, best performance.

The RUnaways number was cute but VERY long and the lead boy dancing in the center was a powerhouse--he was the featured dancer for the whole song--I'm sure we'll be seeing him soon.

Miss Williams did an aces job with "I Hate The Bus"--beautiful--especially after the microphone trip-up that might have taken some of the air out of her performance, but the crowd really cheered her on and she pulled through.

Cynthia Nixon--hm. Nice try, but no real characterization and certainly NO voice at all. But she looked great.

I loved the Edwin Drood duet with Betty and Donna--at first I thought Donna was taking Betty to school, but then Betty bumped it up a notch or two but that final note isn't there anymore. ANd what's with Betty and the constantly moving mike? She looked like she was blowing it.

And Idina again. Yawn.

Lillias did a nice job with her gospel number but it felt a bit static...just didn't give me goosebumps like I wanted. It did annoy me a litle that Lillias kept applauding the orchestra ALL NIGHT. It just seemed like she wanted to step out of the line of other performers and take a little downstage time--could be wrong, just bothered me.

Eartha Kitt was Eartha Kitt, but the music stand REALLY took away from her performance. I didn't understand why she needed it.

My other happy surprise was Adriane Lenox--amazing voice--I can totally see her as Shug Avery, and she brought a completely different energy to Caroline, more world-weary, sexier, earthy...just amazing--Doubt just scratches her surface--can't wait to see her in a musical!

I like Mary Testa, I just didn't like that song and I think it didn't really show her off all that well, of course, it's not an audition I know...

And then there was the big finale, and to be honest, I was just tired of hearing songs from Hair. It was fun to see Mike Nichols sing with Meryl and I also liked the small tribute to Wendy Wasserstein. Great night in the theatre and seeing all the cute West Point boys in their uniforms was a little bonus.

I enjoyed myself too, just not as much as Margo.

re: The Public Sings

I enjoyed myself as well. I felt it was a bit hit and miss--I was a bit confused by the numbers they chose for certain shows. Of all the great numbers from Hair, they chose those? And the guys singing "Black Boys/White Boys" was not really entertaining or amusing.

Anyway, highlights for me:
-The Chorus Line--Noise/Funk Opening
-The Pirates of Penzance number. Kudisch is always stunning
-Elaine Stritch
-THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD.
-Idina Menzel's rendition of the song from SATURN RETURNS. Easily one of the best voices of the night.
-The group number from SATURN RETURNS
-Eartha Kitt's "When it Ends" from THE WILD PARTY. I wish they would have done something else from this show as well, though.
-"I Hate the Bus" and "16 Feet Beneath the Sea" from CAROLINE, OR CHANGE
-Mary Testa'a "There Will Be A Miracle"
-The HAIR finale. Though after seeing the Actor's Fund Benefit of the show a couple of years ago, this didn't live up to that standard at all. Still, very enjoyable.

I hadn't been up to date on those who were added, and those who had dropped. So, Rubin-Vega and Kudisch were great surprises for me, and I was a bit disappointed that there was no Tonya Pinkins. But what can ya do?

I am VERY glad I went. Wouldn't have wanted to miss this.

re: The Public Sings

My rundown:

THE GOOD
-Betty Buckley's beautiful "Old Friends" from I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking it On the Road
-Donna Murphy's pitch-perfect, showstopping "Pirate Jenny". Why the hell isn't she doing the revival?
-The Pirates of Penzance medley.
-Lea DeLaria's funky "New York, New York". Too bad she didn't do "I Can Cook Too", though. It might have been nice if she and Jesse did a duet, as well.
-The dueling Droods. Betty sang it as if no time had passed, and still managed to hit that astounding note at the end.
-Mary Testa's searing "There Will Be a Miracle" from See What I Wanna See.
-Lillias White blowing the roof off of City Center with "There's a Shout" from Saturn Returns.
-Elaine Stritch, in general.
-Daphne Rubin-Vega's moving "Easy to be Hard".
-Chuck Cooper's rousing "Bring All the Boys Back Home".
-Eartha Kitt, being Eartha Kitt, sexy as ever.

THE BAD
-Billy Porter, who sounded like he was severely in pain during "Romance in Hard Times".
-Cheyenne Jackson, in general.
-"White Boys" and "Black Boys"
-Ben Stiller, Zach Braff and Natalie Portman---cute, but painful.

IN BETWEEN
-Cynthia Nixon's "Dance 10, Looks 3". She acted the hell out of it, but the singing was atrocious.
-Idina Menzel's pretty but pitchy "Awaiting You".
-Betty Buckley's "Joe Papp"...she was vocally wrong for it.

Overall, a success. I really enjoyed it.

melissa--I don't recall Betty hitting that note at the end of "Wall"...maybe it's just been THAT long since I listened to the cast tape--yes, I have it on cassette!
